This might belong in the operating system area I don't know, but I can't install Windows98. I can start my computer fine and it goes through scan disk, but as soon as it get to the point where its loading the setup files, when it gets to 100% it hangs and won't go further...the only Windows OS I can get to install (I've tried Windows98, Win98 SE, WindowsME, and WIndows2000 Pro) is Windows2000 Professional. I do no have any anti-virus monitoring programs running.

This baffles me because I have done frequent formats and installs and never, ever ran into this problem. It may help to know that I was going from WindowsME back down to Windows98. I know that with Windows95 it use to change the boot sectors, so that if you were going to go back to Win3.1x it was advisable to do a low-level format.

I haven't tried low-level formatting my drive, yet, but I don't think it is necessary.

What do you guys think? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you completely wiped the partition (fdisk & format) or are just renaming the win folder and trying to then install 98?

You should probably be trying to do a clean install. Sounds to me just like one more reason why ME is a bad idea (problems with it and problemms getting rid of it http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif).

Q195647 (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q195/6/47.ASP) is the only thing I can find so far, You might try a search of the Microsoft Knowledge Database (http://search.microsoft.com/us/SearchMS25.asp) other articles are there, but to find specific info sometimes you have to try several different keywords. Unfortunately I don't have an hour to spend on it right now, and I would actually like to, I need a few links I lost a while back...

Thanks...but that's not the problem. I can't even get WindowsME to reload either...and it doesn't happen at the file transfer part. I did a full format, 3 of them actually, and I FDISKed the hard drive I was formatting and it still happened. I have two drives, a 6.4gb Fujitsu on primary ide, set as master, and a Maxtor 13gb on primary ide set as slave. On my secondary ide chain, my CD-ROM is now a DVD-rom drive, 6x Creative, and my slave cd-rom is a 50x generic POS. Its not the primary CD-ROM drive, because its a POS.

I'm taking my system in to the shop to see if they can fix it. I need a new mobo, and there's been a bunch of other little problems and they said they'd replace it if they couldn't get Win98 or ME to load.

But if you find anything else, please let me know...
