when i have a router hooked up i can't download or upload files on msn
the router lanquages is a little above my head..i do know however that i have nat enabled and all other firewall stuff shut off both on the router and in xp.
I only have two computers on this lan and one win 98 is only used for email eg yahoo..the other is used for everything on the internet as well as getting files off the other computer.
I was wondering if it would be preferable to go the hub route and what the procedure would be to set it up.

setting up a hub couldn't be simpler- all you do is plug your connection line in from telco or cable, then plug your computers into the other plugs to give them a connection.
If you have software from your ISP, just install that on each machine and use the same account logon data on each one.
That's how I do it with DSL here anyways.

Hi Topdogo -
If you have a CABLE connection, you may want to stick with the router. My cable company at least, would require you to purchase a second IP if you were using a hub only. With a router, the CO. only sees the IP of the modem itself. ( The router then assigns IP adresses to the two computers)
I think your problem with not being able to download anything has something to do with the set-up of your router. It should explain a lot about that in your user manual if you have one.
Sorry, that may not help a whole lot but there is no reason your router should prevent you from downloading or uploading files other than the set-up itself.
If someone has something more to add, feel free:)

Depending on the make & model, your router could also be a hub.
Please tell us what you are using.
I have 7 computers networked at my house with an open port for my laptop on a 3-com 8 port 10/100 hub. I have the hub connected to a Linksys 1 port router and I can get on the net from just about anywhere in the house.
It was a breeze to setup. (with a little help from the electrician)
Please provide more info & I'm sure the folks here will get you up and running.

i have no problem getting on the internet using the router.
The problem is trying to download or upload files thru ICQ or MSN.
I don't understand enough about router lanquage to get the correct settings set up to do it and the two sheet manual that comes with the router is and their help is for someone that understands routers..Pure Data is the name of the router.

Hi,
I am not familiar with your setting but most of the Routers in the market(cable or DSL router I mean) have firewall that prevent downloading and uploading from an external network to your internal network. You may want to create a hole in your firewall and allow a specific computer(by its IP address) to send and receive files from outside world.
I am sorry I can't give you specific structions on how to do it with your setting but it is in your router manual or help file. Good luck.

In responce to Jabarnutcase's comment about Cable and a hub, you can connect more than one computer to the internet with a hub by setting one up as a proxy server. I was set up this way before I got my router.
