View Full Version : Computer doesn't boot at all

Hiya kind and friendly people,

Got a small problem here. Basically I had a working PC system comprising of a Soyo 5EH motherboard, AMD K6-2 450 Processor, 2 hard drives, CDROM and CD-Writer drives, SB128, NIC, AGP Voodoo Banshee, and WinTV card.

I say had, because earlier today when re-affixing my TV-in to the back of the TV card (which was loose) I knocked the soundcard loose, turned the PC off to screw the soundcard in and now it won't boot at all: nothing is getting to the monitor and there's no PC speaker beep (there is usually one beep after a successful POST).

I've tried removing all PCI cards which didn't help. Tried disconnecting the IDE channels and resetting the BIOS. Also replaced video card with an old Cirrus one that was definitely working before being put in my machine.

I've also investigated the connections, which are fine - after all, it was working *perfectly* this afternoon - and even replaced the CMOS battery.

There are only two things that occur to me now. Either I have to fork out for a new motherboard (and since Socket 7 mobos are not readily available now, I may as well get a new processor..) or it's something to do with the power supply and having too many PCI cards - doesn't seem plausible really.

Please, if anyone can suggest any ways for me to diagnose it more specifically and/or save money (I am but a lowly student) then I'd very much appreciate it http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks,

Julie

It's sod's law isn't it...

after posting this I went and fiddled with the computer, and it works now! woo hoo

Not entirely sure quite what was wrong in the first place, but I stripped it down to mobo, RAM, power and VGA - no different to what i was doing before, only I took the COM ports out - and it worked!

so I'm ok now :-) never mind
