I think I have some bad memory, and I want to find out if it is bad or some other problem.
the MB thinks it's ok, but win98 crashes every time it is in the board?
booting to the command prompt and running diagnostics 95 or testmem finds no errors on the ram with 16 odd burn-in runs.

any sugestions?

Have you tried the problem stick all by itself? In a different slot?

yes to both.
I have 2 32mb Dimms. as a pair windows98 crashes no matter what order they are used. it also stops HIMEM being loaded by windows98 by its self, but you can boot to a command prompt.
the 1 good 32mb dimm is what I'm using at the moment with no problems.

I haven't tried bank 3 yet but I assume it will give the same results as above.

Possibly it is incompatable with the old stick. But before you give up on it if your BIOS allows the setting of the CAS latency for the memory, try setting it to CAS 3 for the new dimm, maybe both.

Also check the memory speed setting in BIOS. MIne gave me problems set at 60ns, (which I was unaware of, thought it was already at 70ns) I changed it to 70ns and got much better results.

Check the speed of both sticks, if one is 60 and one is 70 they'll usually have problems working together. In that case definitely set BIOS to 70, and it may still give you trouble. The last number printed on the chip should be either a 6 or a 7. That's the speed rating.

I don't belive ether of these are a problem as the sticks are the same, and have been in the board quite happily for over 1 year. it is only just reciently one started to have problems.

I'm leaning towards a win98 problem as further burn-ins (now 44 passes)and no errors. I just can't reinstall at the moment to find out.

can someone point me to a shairware anti-virus program that can check win98 and my ram?

cheers
