Hello. Can anymore suggest a decent dial-up internal or external modem to purchase? Or simply suggesting sources of credible reviews would be appreciated. I'm aware that there are multiple standards now (V.90, V.92 and V.44) yet I've received conflicting advice as to which one to choose for the long run. I know U.S. Robotics and Zoom Telephonics are good brands but are they worth the money and which of these is better, if any?
I'm finally resigned to dumping the WinModem I received with my Compaq system.
As external modems go stay away from a USB modem if you can.
That said I have absolutely no complaints about my USR external (except maybe, the model I have is not going to get the V92 update :(). Overall I would say that USR is a modem that you can't really go wrong with, externals, at least.

Must agree with mjc on this one.
Hardware modem is the only solution. USR
External. Serial port hook-up. And uses
it's own power supply.
Even Linux friendly.
Luck.

I use an external Modem Blaster 56k on the wife's machine. It has a serial port interface.
In my machine, I use an internal USR Performance Pro Fax modem. It's a PCI interface, but unlike other PCI modems, this one uses its own onboard controller. Excellent quality.
I don’t want to sound redundant.
But I also Vote for and Use USR modems in all my systems
ISA, PCI and Externals

They cost a bit more and are well worth the price

I have had very good luck with US Robotics (3COM) modems. I built 2 PCs and plead guilty to taking the USRs out of the old machines before selling/giving them away, and replacing them with $15 CompUSA models. The old USRs went right into the new machines.
