maybe I've missed it, but is there a way to view ALL postings in date order (starting with the most recent)
I'm thinking of when I want to re read that post I read a week ago, but can't remember where. It would be nice to scroll a list than to search every forum, and maybe to catch up after a weeks hols.

Until I can figure out how everything works, maybe this will help. Look at the bottom right of the front page of each forum category, you'll see Pages [1] 2 3 4 etc. Those are links to the next pages with older posts. Use those for now and I'll try to find out how the settings work in the User Control Panel (User CP).
You have the option to set the view to show a certain number of days, but I'm not sure how it works right now. I changed mine from the default to 10 days, I think it was.

thanks Pete, I'm just starting to get my head around it (a little bit) but what I'm really after is
The OLD system of 'todays current topics' but extended. which includes ALL post in time/date order.
just a thought, meanwhile I shall explore some more.

ok.
I thought of a way to get what I wanted.
type * (wildcard) into search engine (for topic) set for yesterday, 1 week etc. and ..........,
got a fatal error message (only put in yesterday)
I HAVE read the topic on the search engine not working, but if and when it does, on the wildcard search alone, I would find it a big advantage,
. & if the search could be saved as a default, say in control panel., even more.
but alas, I'll wait to see how we go on with the new search engine !
On the Main Index page
Directly under the Search Button you should see “Welcome back Your user name “
Under that is a very fast, handy , little search link. “View New Posts ”
It will search for the new posts in all forums
Then list them for you
The Next Thread link on the top and bottom of each thread works nice also
Even reports No Newer thread

thanks rick,
I'm just struggling my way around at the moment. I have discovered the links you mention,
but sometime last week, someone posted a VERY useful link, I can't remember the post topic, nor the member, but I will recognise the link when I see it.
any idea how to find it ?
NOTE: this is just an example, but it's what I frequently do, currently it means searching every forum, I just thought/hoped that there may be an easier way.
A key word from the post or subject and the search engine date setting is the best I can think of at the moment.
Not having the user name or the subject and forum is going to limit you a bit

Rick covered this nicely. Also note that if you are not logged in, the "View New Posts" link changes to one that shows all topics in the last 24 hours. That's useful for those who are on the forums frequently and might find that they have a short list of "new posts" so I will find a way to link that from the front page for those who are logged in.
In the meantime, you can use this link: http://www.pcguide.com/vb/search.php?s=&action=getdaily

Use the search engine, and enter your name in the place to search by user plus whatever else you remember about what you are looking for.
