Hi I am currently looking to buy my first laptop and came across this website (http://www.micropro.com/syscat.htm?product=Notebooks/DeskNotes). It list both desknotes and notebooks. The explanation between the two seems a bit confusing. The following is how the site explains the differences between the two:

Notebook / DeskNote Computers are self contained, Portable Computer
Systems. While Notebook computers are completely portable, DeskNote
computers require external power such as an external battery, auto/airline adapters or conventional AC line power. Both Notebook and DeskNote computers have one year warranties, while Notebook batteries are warranted for six months.

The part that I don't completely get is where it says that Notebooks are completely portable but that Desknotes require external power such as external battery etc. Don't all laptops require a battery to run when on the go?

Thanks,

Yes, laptops usually have batteries, and that may be part of their definition. These desknotes then are not laptops, they require, as the site states, external power. Looking at the configs, I see that this is to keep costs down.

Differences between the P4 and P4-based Celeron notwithstanding, the lowest Celeron desknote comes with a DVD drive and 15" screen, whereas the lowest P4 notebook comes with a CD-RW drive and 14.1" screen but is a full $200 more. The usefulness of the two drives cancel eachother out in my opinion, but a bigger screen for less money? That's significant!

The downside is that a desknote needs to be plugged into something where ever it goes, but unless you go on tropical safaris for work, that shouldn't be an insurmountable problem in today's world of electricty. Although I would have to say it's more of a novelty than a practicality, and your friends will think you quite odd with a not entirely portable computer - as such it's not the best idea, but it is innovation, which is a commodity that we need in this business.
