View Full Version : Modem: seen but not heard
Right here goes:
I have a laptop which has a PCMICIA slot into which I put a Psion Gold modem. Windows 2000 recognises this and set this as my modem (which is nice). To test the modem I run a program from Psion (EasySwitch) to check the modem for dial tone, cable etc. The program doesn't see the modem. Now am I going mad or is the computer a little confused. I've tried re booting and have read the trouble shooting pages but this problem is not covered. Any bright ideas to try and find this mysterious modem that is there yet not! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Some modem and NIC card diag programs won't work in NT/2000 because they what "direct" access to the hardware. In NT/2000 this is not allowed.
Why not just setup a dailup profile to a phone number (yours) and see if the modem dials out? If you must use the Diag. program try booting to DOS,hopefully the program comes with instructions on how to use it in DOS.

Thanks for the tip but I have more news. Having given up with the modem at work I took it home had dinner etc and tried again..it recognised the card with no problems. My guess is that the card/ computer was too hot (the card was hot to touch) not that this helps. Can temperature affect things like this?

Glad you got it working!
As for the heat...Yes, if it got hot enough it could fail. You might want to keep an eye on it. The cards do get a little warm sometimes, but they shouldn't be getting hot enough to fail more than once.
