No dial tone?

Hi all.
I have a MBoard 748MRL-H, Fax-Modem Motorola 56k PCI, celeron 366Mhz, 256 Mb Ram and when I Use a test machine on the Control Panel/Modem, no problem, it connects fine. But when connects to the Internet (Dial up)I get this "No dial Tone " message and then the line is wrong.
Lather unplugged the wire of the computer plug(fax-moden) and the phoneline is fine again.
Really, I am going crazy.

If this is a new problem and you haven't added new software recently then boot to DOS and run scanreg/restore.

Otherwise try removing the modem from Device Manager and reboot and then reinstall it.

Also try deleting the Dial Up Network info for that connection and then reinstall it.

You can also try contacting your ISP and working through the various settings

Modem troubleshooting can be hell!! Don't I know it. Can you dial an ordinary telephone number using PhoneDialer from Accessories; that at least should confirm that the dialing part is OK and that the problem then lies somewhere between you and your ISP's data connection.

I have had a similar problem, plus disconnects, variable download speeds and inability to connect to servers, etc, etc, since Easter. No help from here or from searches or from ISP until yesterday, when I came across an article, by accident, that (so far) has resolved all my problems.

Some dialup ISP's apparently work best if:
(1) The Primary Network Logon in the network settings is "Client for Microsoft Networks" and not "Windows Logon", which is what I had been using.
and..
(2) Enable "Bring Up Terminal Window" before and/or after Dialing; from DialUpNetworking<>YourConnection<>Properies<>General<>Configure<>Options (but may not be the same path in Win98). By doing nothing more than clicking on OK when these windows appear has made a huge difference. This can be automated if it works.

It can do no harm to try these out if Gallaeglah's advice doesn't work - but I would love to understand why it has made such a difference to me using both WinME AND Win2K.

Is the test machine just checking-out your modem's internals or does it try to and actually dial and even connect to a number.

If it does, this seems to indicate that the phone line is basically OK and that the problem lies with your own modem's settings, drivers, etc; since you can connect using the "test machine" but not even with PhoneDialer.

I would double-check all the Modem and Dialing properties and cables/connections.

Then consider getting the most up-to-date Drivers, physically take out the modem, uninstall all instances of Modems in Device Manager and then reinstall according to the maker's instructions.

Here's a link for Motorola's SM56 Drivers/Info (http://e-www.motorola.com/collateral/SM56_DRIVERS.html) but maybe your's is a diff model.

Finally, some Modems work best if the latest verson of DirectX is installed and some updated drivers may require at least a certain version to be installed.

try Hyperterminal to connect, just opn a session, use an 800 no# to dial out, if you get a connection then you know it's in your modem settings.
