The error means that Netbios is disabled on one of your 2 "network" cards. (the first one has no IP address which is why it get's the "no host" error )

Since you havn't answered my other post, I can't help you any further.

Good Luck:)

EDIT I'll assume that this "nbtstat -A 123.456.78 " is a typo. If not you might want to check the IP addresses you are using on both your computers. And of course the IP you type into the NBTSTAT command.

i don't want to hack and break into computers

Don't worry, that isn't part of today's lesson. :D

Now I'll assume that you have already done a "ping" test. So that IP connectivity has been checked. In the other post I asked did you use the XP networking wizard? Also have you turned on Xp's "Internet Connection Firewall"?

We must first make sure that isn't running or you'll never be able to access another computer on your LAN.

Next open your "network places" and right click in the window. Choose "properties" and , in the new window, right click on "Local Area Connection". Again choose "properties" then click "Internet protocol TCP/IP". On the new window click "advanced", open the "wins" page and at the bottom you'll see your Netbios settings. Make sure "Enable Netbios over TCP/IP" is checked.

No, problem. I thought I give it shot and see if I can help. :)

Now the Network Wizard turns on the firewall by default. This link Internet connection firewall (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall.htm) tells you all about ICS. By the way this link WinXp file sharing (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/filesharing.htm) has some good info too and might help.

Have you tried running nbtstat -A on the 98 computer to get the netbios name information of the XP box?

Other than the firewall or the wrong IP setup, I can't think of any reason why you shouldn't be able to see the other computer's name cache.

EDIT You may have noticed I edited out a section on netbeui. This is because with netbeui you can only use the "net" commands to display shares. (you can use it with TCP/IP too) This got me to thinking are you sure you want to use "nbtstat" instead of "net".
The net command shows shares and allows you to connect from the command prompt. NBTSTAT only shows the Netbios name cache, it doesn't allow you to connect or even see the shared resources of a remote computer.

Ok first answer these questions.
Can you ping each computer's IP address? (so from the 98 computer ping the XP computer's IP and then switch that around.)

Have you turned on "file sharing" on the 98 computer?

Can you run the "nbtstat" command on the 98 computer to list the XP computer's netbios name cache?

Do you have any firewalls like Zonealarm running on either the XP or 98 computer?

Did you check that "netbios" was enabled on your XP computer?
Also If you open "run" at the XP computer and type "\\computername" (replace computername with either the name or IP of the 98 computer.) does a windows of "shares" open up? Now try the same at the 98 box and use the XP's computername in "run" .

#1 i can ping each other .

#2 and yes the file sharing is turned on in win 98

#3 i can't get either netbios chart from the xp to the win 98 i can't view the xp's and the xp's can't view anyones .

#4 do not have zonealarm on either system

#5 and netbios is enabled on winxp

and everytime i go to run on either machine and type an ip address
the lil box with the big red and white x comes up and say it can't find anything ...

and ps do you have any type of icq , aol or anything instant messenger

No, I don't have any type of PM software like ICQ installed on my computer. (I'm just not big on those instant messager programs)

i can't view the xp's

Do you mean that you can't run nbtstat -n on the XP computer?
Also how do you connect your XP laptop to your other computers?

Ok, you won't be able to see any remote netbios information thur an AOL connection. ( I'm sure they block netbios) Trying to troubleshoot that is not going to get you anywhere. :(

You really need to use a HUB and some CAT5 cable to connect your computers togethere.

If you can give me an idea of what you trying to do, I might be able to give you some other ideas to accomplish your goal.

Ok, from what limited info I have I would say your going about it all wrong. "nbtstat" isn't used to access anything or even show you what you can access.

If you want to access a file or see what can be accessed, you should use the "net" command. However I can't say if the "net" command will work with an AOL connection. As you have already seen AOL blocks netbios traffic.

To see what switches can be used with the net command type "net /?" at the command prompt.

NET COMMANDS FOR FILE SHARES (http://www.ss64.demon.co.uk/nt/net_share.html) should help you.

Don't know of any dial ups that allow for broadcast netbios traffic. If the computer your trying to connect to is not a local one and your project only allows for "netbios" connections, you may be out of luck :(

However, give the "net" commands a try. If they don't work then you should speak to whomever assigned you the project and get their input.
