My daughter just got a laptop for school. She looked at getting a power adapter for the car (plugs into the cigarette lighter) but found them to be a little on the expensive side ($120 to $140). Could she use a regular power converter for cars/RVs? The kind that plugs into the lighter and has regular electrical outputs on the box. My understanding that people use them in RVs to plug a regular portable TV into. A co-worker said he plugs a surge protector power strip into his to run a couple of electrical devices in his RV.

Here is the one I have used for over 4 years now.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004YJYY/qid=1026470017/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-0977675-2834402

The Whistler 300 watt power inverter ($60.00)

One warning with these units.
Remove the laptop battery while using this unit .
It has been said But to date not proven that these power inverter’s produce a problem
with rechargeable batteries. ( Shorten their life time)

You’ll also have to install a new Fuse for the Outlet you plug it into
I Installed an Auxiliary outlet ( Cig. lighter Plug) with a 30 amp fuse
It has never given me any problem
