I have it on my Celeron 500 with 3 GB for Windows 98 SE and about 9 GB for Mandrake 8.2.
Just a configuration question...
My modem connects Windows to the internet but I can't get it to work for Linux. As you can see when you view my screenshot at http://www3.sk.sympatico.ca/ajohn/rockwell.jpg , linux does recognize it at least.

Hey Jes,

Is this per chance a combination modem/soundcard from an HP?

Either way, the chipset of the modem in your screenshot seems to be from a winmodem (aka software modem). If so, you will probably have difficulties getting it to work in Linux (but I guess you know this :) ).

A quick search turned up this (http://www.conexantsystems.com/customer/md_driverdownload.jsp) from the people who make the chip in question. So it looks like a proprietary Linux driver might be available sometime this summer.

This (http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html#Database) link has more information on Winmodems, and it looks like it has a link to a beta driver for your modem chipset. It also has links to several helpful How To's and FAQs.

Good Luck

John

In other words, jes, get a real modem....:D. An external hardware modem will solve the problem without trying to chase down a Linux driver that has been coming out for almost 18 months now. (I used to have a connexant internal pci winmodem in my HP.....and I looked and looked  )

I bought this computer from Future Shop in 1999. Big mistake. When you open it, you can see where they cut corners just to save money. It came with 98 SE installed and for reasons like this, will not work with any other OS. I have tried many disros of linux, w2k pro, and xp pro. with adverse results. This computer is a huge pain in the...
I think that I will be buying another computer soon. I think that I should go to a small mom n' pop orgainization. What do you think?
