View Full Version : New Computer Boot

I purchased a Pent 1.6ghz CPU on a Gigabyte P4 Titan Series Motherboard, 256 DDR Ram. When I initially booted the computer, it goes thru the sequence of booting, but shows NOTHING from the Win 98 Floppy, as if it's NOT being recognized. New HDD also installed...EMPTY.
Need Ideas on WHAT MIGHT be the problem. The cpu was placed on the board by the store, along with the ram. During the boot sequence, it is seeing the HDD and the CD ROM. I tried changing the order, putting the CD ROM first but to NO avail.
Appreciate any and ALL suggestions...
THANKS,
Billy G

Hello BillyG,
Welcome tohttp://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!
Have you tried setting the floppy first in the BIOS?

Does the floppy drive light come on? Does it stay on or go off during boot? If it stays on, the power cable is plugged in backwards. And I assume you mean a Win98 boot disk? You'll need to format the drive, etc.

Jumby, if the light is staying on it is not the power cable but the flat ribbon cable that connects the drive to the motherboard.

Try it one thing at a time. unplug everything but CPU, memory, video card and keyboard. See if you get video. At this point you only need to run it long enough to be sure you have a picture, then shut down.
Correction...at this point, go into BIOS and set the boot sequence to A;C;SCSI, Set hard drive(s) to auto, save changes and exit, then shut down.
IMPORTANT: Be sure and turn the power TOTALLY OFF or unplug it from the wall when adding/removing components.
Once you know you have video as a bare bones unit, connect the floppy drive, with a write protected start up disk in, and check two things. Does the floppy LED blink at first, or come on and stay on, and if it blinks, will it boot to the start up disk. Don't worry about the "No hard disk found" error message, you'll fix that momentarily.
Once you know it will boot to a floppy, add the hard drive, and go from there, one step at a time.
If the floppy LED comes on and stays on, as pointed out above, one end of the ribbon cable is backward, flip it over and try again.
