If the icon is not present then open the Control Panel from the Start button and Settings and look for the Network icon. Double click to open the network properties. Do you have any or the correct network components installed?
PS You can also show/hide it on the desktop by using the TweakUI Tool (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q190643)

look in your device manager to see if your network card is setup correctly. If you don't have network card or if it is not setup correctly you would not see the nn icon.
good luck.

I've never had a network card on this pc and NN has shown up OK. If you remove all the component from the Network Settings it will (if I remember right) disappear; it then reappears if the Settings are restored. eg Microsoft Client for Networks, an adapter and a protocol - usually TCP/IP.

Just thought I'd through my 2 cents worth in. I had a similar problem where my 2nd computer wouldn't see my 1st computer even though I had set both up according to instructions. Couldn't figure out why until I remembered that I had ZoneAlarm set up on my first computer. When I shut down ZoneAlarm everythning was there just as it should be.
