Hi, here's the story. I just built a new PC, AMD 800-D, 10G HD, 64MB RAM. All was ok, running at an amazing speed through the windows installation ( it only took about 10mins) but now as soon as windows kicks in it runs so slowly, it literally takes about 2mins to open up the My Computer window. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif Any suggestions, reckon ive made a mistake somewhere???

Oh, and its now heat, its got a huge heatsink and three fans knocking around the case. The BIOS monitors the temp, and its running at normal temperature.

First thing I would look for is BIOS settings. Might work to just set BIOS defaults, or see if you have Optimal or Performance Defaults, an d set that one. Sounds like Internal or External Cacheing could be turned off to me..Check and make sure hard drive and floppy parameters are correct before you save and exit. Write down any future changes you make, after setting default, or optimal, and change things one at a time, except for hard drive & floppy...

It sounds to me like Win98 might not have installed the Hard Drive Controller for this specific Motherboard, Motherboard Resources or the Advanced Power Management drivers for it. Try going into Device Mgr. and looking to see if the HD controller is specific to your motherboard or a "generic" driver. Then remove the Advanced Power management and let Win98 refind it.

Sorted thanks - a quick reinstal of windows got it running ok, i think it was the IDE controller. Now to get my 2nd harddrive installed.
