Hi Vic-

Have you already clicked on "view/toolbars" above your browser and checked (or un-checked) various options of your toolbars?

Did this just happen suddenly without you making any changes either to your system or your browser options?

Strange!

Also, in the same menu, you'll notice that you can "lock or unlock" the toolbars. If they're un-locked your mouse pointer can resize etc. the toolbars

Hi jab'

Not done a thing, it was all ok this morning.

I've been through the options and got the browser back as it was, albeit with some difficulty, having to over-ride some toolbars to squeeze them out before others would move.
I'm Just considering doing a restore to see if I can recover my links.

Vic Have you tried the IE "repair" option in Add/Remove programs? Seems to sorted out some problems I had; it might work for you, and be quicker than a restore

Hi David,

yes I have thanks, I did a restore first hoping to get my links back, but alas no. I did a 'customise' on it, but it went again, so I did it again and locked the toolbar, then did the ie repair option, so far it seems ok.

Now if only I can find those links !

lesson learned, keep a copy of links in favourites folder (which I back up)

oh oh

put in some more links today, lasted a few hours, then suddenly weren't there anymore

Vic Is it the Links Toolbar, the Links Folder or the "Links" (eg the URLs) inside the folder that you are referring to?

There is a key at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar called LinksFolderName and whose value is normally "Links".

You can change this to anything you like (including any other folder in your Favorites) and it will then appear in the Links Toolbar in IE. If the folder doesn't exist then a new one is created as soon as you open Explorer. In similar manner if you delete the Links folder, a new one is created when next needed. There is nothing else special about the normal Links folder - so you can delete it (save the "links" in it first) with impunity - perhaps it is "corrupted" in some way.

If you enter an empty string "" as the LinksFolderName, no folder is selected and the whole of the Favorites are shown in the Links Toolbar.

PS First backup the Registry or at least the Registry Key anyone that is not used to messing in there.

Thanks paul,

I think you've helped to throw some light on the subject by making me think it through.

I had a folder called 'links' in fav's (the one you refer to)

also another (sub) folder,(links) inside a (sub) folder (all my favourites)
whilst tidying them up (before backing up) I think that one may have overwritten the other, hence dissapearing links (url's)

at least I think that's what happened. :(

nope. that was obviously not it.

it's just done the same thing again, my 'custom' browser arrangement blown to bits, (toolbar lock now OFF) Links 'BAR' gone.

fortunately, I re shuffled my toolbars, unselected view links, reselected view links, and it came back.

but what's causing it ?

I've steered clear of IE6 so I'm shooting in the dark a bit. IE6 Toolbars (http://lists.evolt.org/archive/Week-of-Mon-20010305/026967.html) looks like a similar problem encountered during its beta testing - but without a resolution.

Customizing the Toolbar (http://www.microsoft.com/enable/training/ie6/toolbar.htm) is the M$ "training manual" but you probably know all that stuff and about locking/unlocking.

From newsgroups: msnews.microsoft.com microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser was one reply that might be relevant and worth trying.
To restore the default IE toolbar layout, follow these steps:
1. Close all instances of IE
2. Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe), browse to the following registry key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\]

3. Delete the "WebBrowser" sub-key
4. Close registry editor and restart IE

I got IE6 when it first came out, not intentionally, I had a pc prob & 5.5 went down, when I looked for a d/l I could only find IE6 available. so I d/l that, (it wasn't until later that I heard 'bad press' about it)

that said I have never had a prob with it (until now) & couldn't understand what everyone was on about.

I added the google toolbar, set the buttons, put the addy bar where I wanted it, and it has stayed like that, until the other day when somehow the toolbars got unlocked, links went and browser re arranged.

ok I may have done something to cause it the first time, but I don't think I did the second time, and I'm sure I didn't the third time.

what bugged me was I lost the half dozen or so links that were in there, a couple of which were not in favs, (or backed up) & it took me absolutely hours to find them again.

anyway thanks for the links, interesting!

There seems to be less bad press about IE6 these days. Maybe they have patched up some of the bugs. With hindsight - the most common problems occured after upgrading from IE5.5SP2 in particular; this combo was the most common one for screwing-up the .dll versions so that they became incompatible. The M$ newsgroups can be a good source of problem resolution - though they are not as easy to search as Mr Google!

I seem to remember now, had probs with .jpg's I think it was, turned out to be a 5.5 patch, did a workaround, then other probs started to develop, so I went for another d/l, thats when I got IE6.

This is a simple reply,
Did you look in history for links that you might have used. does not solve problem but you might be able to find you links,{if you used them].

LOL ... good thinking ... or maybe even get them from the super hidden index.dat files (if you haven't had utilites scrubbing them clean!!) - don't tell us they are of some use after all. :D
