Hi folks,

I recently put together a computer using an Intel D815eea motherboard, 500mhz PIII proccessor, 80gig Maxtor HDD, Sony 56x CD-ROM drive, RAGE 128 video card, Creative modem blaster, SoundMAX intergrated digital audio, generic floppy, Micro optical mouse and a M$ keyboard. I'm using w2k and win98se on a dual boot.

Everything looks good and all functions are there but in device manager I have an "unknown pci device" with a big yellow question mark. I haven't any idea what it is. If I uninstall it in safe mode I get the installation wizard on bootup. No drivers are found and there it is in device manager again.

I'm probably overlooking the obvious. Could someone clue me in?

TIA :)

Hmmm-

I'm not familiar with that MB, but it's not an on-board PCI modem is it?

Thanks guy but no, it's not onboard. It's an add in card. I've had good luck in the past just uninstalling an "unknown device" in safe mode, but this one keeps coming back!

I realize you couldn't take out your video card so have you tried taking out your modem, uninstalling it and seeing if the yellow question mark comes back then? Is the modem a voice/data/fax one and is it fully installed (all options)?

There's just 2 slots being used (cards)?

Hi Ted,

Yes. I have only two cards installed, the modem and the video card. Both of them are working fine. Both appear in device manager correctly. Drivers installed etc. The OS seems to be picking up something that isn't there. Or something I don't know about. I'll try pulling the modem and get back to you shortly. Thanks. :)

Nope. That didn't work. Any more suggestions??

Hi Steve,

It's been my experience that soundcards (on PCI cards or onboard) often want to install 'extra' devices that will sometimes show up as unknown PCI devices in the device manager.

To see if this is the case, boot into safe mode and remove the device (just as you did previously), then disable the onboard sound in the BIOS. If your unkown device is gone when you reboot, you know what is causing it.

Also, I assume that the device is unknown to both Win98 and W2k; if not, just compare their respective lists (I feel silly even suggesting this, but I usually overlook the simple stuff, so maybe you do too :) ).

Thanks John,

Yup, it's showing up in both w2k and 98se. ;) I guess I'll have to start removing more components, like you say. It's onboard sound with a rather large driver and software program so I guess that's the next step. I'll give it a shot and post back.

Peace and Love. :)

Have you installed the chipset drivers for your 815 board? They are not native to 98, nor 2k i believe.

Try downloading the chipset driver for 815 from Intel and see if that isn't your problem.

Hi Steve-
I just wanted to clear something up concerning my first post, which sounded really dumb. (I tend to do that sometimes- Type without thinking first)
What I meant to say is that I acquired a comp once that had a mb with the remnants of a little soldered in modem neatly tucked away where I could barely see it.
Before I fired it up, I plugged in a new Creative modem card in a spare slot, and had a similiar problem with a mystery device showing up in device manager. (Ended up having to disable it- Kinda like disabling onboard video when adding an agp card.)
While I'm sure thats not your problem, I felt the need to make myself more clear. :o
Now I'll stay out of it and let some of these other guys that seem to be headed in a much better direction, help you. :)

Have a great day! :D

Thanks everyone. iisbob nailed it. I went to Intel's site and got the download. No more "unknown pci device". But...what a riot! My audio is now going crazy. Everything sounds like the chipmonks have invaded the computer. I think it's hysterical, my daughter DOESN'T agree.
Bob? Anyone? Any ideas on how to slow the audio down? :)

Ok, are you using windows 2k? i know that Intel's application accelerator drivers have an issue with 2k-i'm not sure if ther is a patch for it, but look for the newest version of their acclerator software and download it, if that doesn't work then go into the media properties and slowly reduce the hardware acceleration peformance until Alvin talks normally. ;)

Thanks bob, all is well. I uninstalled the SoundMAX program and reinstalled. Chipmunks gone. Thanks again for all the help. I appreciate it. :)
