While installing home edition XP on my new PC, it loads
drivers, etc., and then stalls on a blue screen
with "Windows Startup" (double underlined) on the top left
and at the lower left is "Setup is Starting Windows"; this
is in a horizontal white-gray bar running the full length
of the screen, about a half inch width.
Has anyone had similar experience? How was it resolved?
Components installed:
Abit KT7A MBrd w/ 6.0 BIOS
Athlon 1800
gForce 2MX video
IBM 46G Hrd drive
CD and Floppy drive

I saw a post with a problem similar to yours in here ..I tried to find it to give you the link but I can't find it now (sod's law lol)
The post in question mentioned the fact that the IBM hard drive was causing a problem with the install, but until I find the post thats as much as I can remember....I'll keep looking for it;)

Thank you, philzee. You may well be on to something, IBM harddrive problems. On the site you mention, one person suggests checking the onboard controller. Where can I find that information?

well you have the same motherboard as myself and on my motherboard the IDE controller is the "VIA Bus master IDE controller".
but the only way i know of to update the onboard controller is to install the via 4in1 drivers for it....but if you can't even get XP up and running then I don't know how you would do this?
maybe a more experienced person like MJC can help? (I hope you are reading this MJC ;) )

Just for info: I resolved my problem of not being able to complete the setup of Win XP on a new PC. I updated the BIOS from the 7P version that the new board came with to the 9R from ABIT website. Presto! The machine loved it and lapped up the XP OS. Thank you all for your suggestions. But, it apparently was not the IBM HHD. However, I have another slight problem now; it won't boot unless I have the Win XP CD in the reader, although the OS is on the harddrive. I'll start a new thread on that issue.
