In older computers, the power was turned on and off by a front panel or rear panel pushbutton or rocker switch. In the newer ATX power supplies the power management is performed via the motherboard and software.
I need to use the ATX power supply in a non-computer application. Therefore, I will have no motherboard or software to turn the required +12 volts DC on and off. I need to know how to trick the power supply on and off using external switch or switches or jumpers to perform the function. Please advise.

we'll try this again http://www.gideontech.com/guides/psu_powerup/psu03.jpg

then get a SPDT Switch {single Pull,double throw}

Either wire from the switch can be placed within the green or black connector on the ATX plug.
Just make sure you connect one to green and one to BLK.

Thanks much. Saved me a lot of fooling around and possible smoke!

Most ATX power supplies also have an on/off switch on the supply itself. Don't know if this will help or not but good luck.

Most I've seen do not have a switch. That's what triggered my query in the first place. The answer provided previously is: Short the green wire to the adjacent black wire on the motherboard connector. That turns the supply on.

My IBM (MY BM) is ATX and it does not have a double rowed ATX connector. Instead it has 2 flat connectors plus a third for the power trigger circuit. I needed to D/L the manual and that's how I found that the small 3 conductor plug was the trigger. I don't remmember the colors but once shorted together the PS worked. My particular prob was on the mobo itself.

Oh, Yoda, It is Single "Pole" Double Throw ;) . But anyway not needed (2 ons, one off). An SPST would be fine as an on-off switch. Depends what you have in the junk drawer (or room or house, dependintg on if you're a hopeless packrat or not... :O ).

Me? Lazy. Use the illuminated switch on the power strip... :p
