Hi, I've never seen ths before, but want to so this.I want the user to be prompted for a password to exit the application using "CTRL+ALT+DEL" keys.Suppose I'm running an application to record the user's activities & if the user terminates the application there is no use in installing it.So I want the user to be prompted for a password when he uses the "CTRL+ALT+DEL" key combination to terminate it.Is this possible?I think anything is possible for "If there is a WILL there is a Way ".

Start studying your user's manuals and/or Administrator's kit documentation and the help files.

I have already informed you that at least a couple of us strongly suspect you are expecting us to do your job as system administrator for you. That's not what we are here for. We will help. but we do not hand it to you on a silver platter.

The objective here is for YOU to learn it, and by simply handing over neatly packaged answers to every administration function you ask for, we are not helping, only making you more dependent upon us to do it for you. Somewhere along the line we have to cut the umbilical cord and let you learn to do it for yourself.

I too get the impression your a new admin.

Oh well....mabey this can help you.

First look at system policies or group polices to disable the Taskmanager for non-admin users.

Go here (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q226359) , to learn how to disable control keys in win32 applications.

Next time, I'll be expecting a cut of your salary. :D :D :D

Good Luck :)

hey, I'm sure most of us don't mind helping even if the above is the case, (as we are doing your JOB for you- or at least helping) a simple thank you, or comment that what we have posted actually HELPED you is what we would like. It seems that you ask and ask, and then we never hear if we even helped you or not.

I've been following the Forum career of Netharam with some interest:

a) Because he didn't reply twice to my assists, or attempt to asssist him

b) Because he asks an awful lotta questions and is clearly what the P2P boys might call a "Freeloader"

c) Because I wonder how he found our Forums in the first place. Who did ask? Was it Adam or Eve?

My main point is, however, and speaking as one who asked an awful lot of questions since I came on board, quite what is Netharam doing wrong. OK, his sense of ettiquete may not square with ours, but then he obviously lives worlds apart from us - and he equally obviously believes he needs help, hence all his questions.

Can some cries for help be justified and other types not?

If not, then what can or can't be regarded as genuine must be spelled for rest of us, including prospective members, because there sure as hell are a lot more Netharam's out there, all looking for "help".

As Supreme Exalted Grand Master Geek, I think that Paleo Pete, whilst being very diplomatic, is walking a very fine line with his comments. Others perhaps expressed more appropriate views.

Tsk,tsk,tsk....... :D

If you wish to be a good network admin you gotta learn to do your research. That includes reading each post in your own thread carefully. If you have further questions then post them with details of what you don't understand.

EDIT

Mitch, I always get the impression from neth' that if a post doesn't "work" for him he just ignores it. (this thread is a case in point) This might make alot of folks belive that he's just wants us to do his work/research for him rather than working togethere to solve his problem.

For example, I have already explain to him about posting more information in order to get better answers. Yet, notice how in this very thread he didn't bother to post what operating system he uses (Which is very important in this case since he wants to make a change to how his OS works.), or even if he bothered to read the answers he got.

Oh well.......

EDIT 2

Hey, I just found out you can edit your own post even if there is a post after it. Cool :)

{{my opinion only}}

These are PC-Help forums.

We are all here to help each other with computer problems, and this is the best place so far I have found to come to consistently to get an answer for easy and not too easy questions. Here we find people who are willing to devote their time and effort to help another person from anywhere with a computer problem. Often this involves RESEARCH.

We don't mind researching to help an individual or an occasional organization with a problem, we don't mind helping people in business who occasionally get stuck, that's what were're here for.

;)

However, when someone tells us that they are just asking random questions for their database, so that this can be shared with a specific group of people, and the person requesting us to do this work is getting paid for it, and- the person has no "practicle" use or reason specific to a problem he/she is having and wants help- it amounts to us doing this project for that person- this is not right in my opinion.

If I am getting paid to create a database for a company where I am getting PAID to do this, and I come here and want all of you to do this for me is that ok??

It's a question of helping a person - if a person (or company) is having a particular current problem and needs help fixing it- then YES- positively we would all help- many of us having been in that position a time or two ourselves.

So, in summation- if a question is asked that one feels uncomfortable answering they shouldn't.

This of course is much easier said than done for some of us.

but can you see it if we were to get the 'rep' of being a site that will do all college students homework, or companies could just stop hiring people because they could just post all their concerns here and get them all addressed for free??

think about it.

;)

Well in my opinion, if it wasn't for this forum both my PC and my sons PC would be out of action for a great deal longer than I could cope with. I think the best use of these forums is to point people in the direction of the answer, and save us hours of pulling hair out and getting no-where
for example: Both MJC and sea69 always have a link that answers my question or that gives me tools to get the job done and for this I am truly thankful:), and if I can help someone else on the way to finding the answer to my own problem then that is even better :D

Netharam,

To make easier for those members who look into your often searching questions and in order to avoid repetion, why don't you select "CP" (Control Panel) and then edit your own profile to include your System Details.

Click on to my own profile if you want and see how it looks. Not perfect, but hopefully helpful to others.;) ;)

Let us all know how get on.

Hi netharam

Hi, everybody hope all of you have a very bad opinion on me.For Your kind information I wish to give you some details

1) I'm new to this site, but I like it very much for It is very useful.

2) I really don't know of how to maintain my posts.i.e I tried searching before posting but found no matchings & so I posted them. This is after " I was advised to perform a search before posting ".I agree & also regret for my mistakes. Please apologise.

3)I knew that I could add my profile only after "Mitch Hatfield" said, because I'm in INDIA & have not used such forums earlier or had such contacts, but I liked these contacts.

4)I think most of you have the impression that I'm making money out of your replies.I really feel [bad on you guys for thinking very very cheap of myself.Being an Indian I've never wished to make money out of someone's effort.I dislike that very much.I'm still a student & from my childhood i.e from the time I started using computers I have a crush that "I should be the master of computers" among my colleagues & friends. So I used to learn a lot about computers & do some critical tasks that others find it difficult.I've never charged people who have accomplished their critical tasks thro' me.I do such things for FAME & NAME & nto for money.

Note: Please don't say that thing again.

5)The main thing here is I also tell people that this job is not actually solved by me & that "You people hve replied me"

6)Earlier I felt very proud of having such contacts & used to tell everyone that my doubt was cleared by a person in UK & so on.I was really glad & happy with this site, but I didn't expect this.

7)I had already replied why I haven't greeted the replies. This is because as "Ghost" said I just ignore the replies that doesn't solve mine either. This is just normal in all the discussion forums.for eg.microsoft discussion forums & "Javaranch" where people don't bother to reply whether they were solved or puzzled.

7) Sorry again GHOST_HACKER for not mentioning the OS in this post.I'm terribly sorry for that for this is out of mere carelessness & when I posted this one I was just thinking of windows98 & forgot to mention it.Moreover You have already said that I've got ample of replies, but did you notice that they are not the actual replies.

My post wasn't to disable the CTRL+ALT+DEL keys but to prompt for a password when an application is wished to be terminated. Are your replies correct to my post?

I wish this to be done in both windows98 SE & windows2000.

MY actual problem:

1)I've been designing an application in java that will keep track of what the user does after his login until he exits the system.

2)Here there is an option for the user to stop my application using the CTRL+ALT+DEL keys, but as yoiu suggest if I disable these keys totally I cannot stop the other applciations that don't respond & gradually killing my system. So I thought of a better way to prompt for a password so that the my application can be terminated only by the "Admin".

3)Moreover this application resides as a system tray Icon & when the user selects the "EXIT" menu from the tray icon I prompt for a password which is controlled by ny application i.e. java.,but I lose control outside the application & that resulted in this post.

NOTE:
I wish most of my tasks to be done thro' programs rather than the user manually doing it,because I'm going to distribute this application
FOR FREE(Plz note this )& I can't suggest the user to set the settings to this, that & so on. So I wish to do that without disturbing the installer or the user.

Hope You people might have understood my actual situation.I do such things for FAME & not for MONEY.

I hate these words "MONEY MATTERS A LOT", for I don't consider it much.

My short posts are because I don't have an internet connection at home, but browse from the browsing centers & I pay for that to learn something different & precious & not to waste my money here in vain.

Only now I found in my profile that I had given my occupation as "Programmer".Now I have edited it & you can trust me for that.I really don't know why I had given that there, but when I got registered in this site I was asked to quit the system for the system was running in battery power due to power failure in the "Browsing Center".So I wouldn't have noticed that column clearly. Now I 've also filled the columns left out that day. Sorry again,Plz co-Operate.

OK,Now I have an idea of what your trying to do. :D

First, the Taskmanager can't not be password protected. However you can "enable" it only for admins. But,as you pointed out, this would not allow normal users to exit other programs.

What your trying to do is password protect the "end task" function. However, Windows doesn't allow for "end task" authenication. (it's really "all or nothing" in Windows)

So what you may want to do is hide the process (program) from taskmanager.Which can be done with Windows 95/98. Read the following post carefully to get some ideas of how to do it in a Windows NT/2000 enviroment.

Google post (http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&threadm=3c49489d%241_1%40dnews&rnum=3&prev=/%20groups%3Fq%3Dhide%2Bprocess%2Bform%2Btaskmanage r%2<br%20/>6hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-%208%26selm%3D3c49489d%25241_1%2540dnews%26rnum%3D 3)

Notice that the more details you give in your post the better the replies will be and if something doesn't work for you -say so- don't ignore it or I'll just move on to something else. :)

Good Luck :)

I used Google and entered "hide process taskmanager" as my keywords. Using those keywords I'll start first with a "web" search and then do a "groups" search.
