some interesting thoughts on M$ new "security" measures....http://online.securityfocus.com/columnists/96

And think about what older systems might be worth when you start you next upgrade project...

The Brave New World of MS marches on.

I understand what MS is trying to get at to make things more secure. And then if it throws sand in the gears of the Open Source movement that's all the better for Redmond.

It sounds like an ambitious project to take on, albiet I heard AMD and then later Intel are on board to redesign the architecture of their chips.

Wow what a slick move.
While this sounds like a good thing, it's real purpose seems to be to protect content providers, to permit Microsoft to enforce draconian licensing schemes, and quite possibly to allow Microsoft to act as gatekeeper for all PC software, allowing them to collect royalties on that software as though those systems were nothing more than video game consoles.
I read about Microsoft's Palladium project a week ago and the same thought was going through my head. I don't understand the security issues but I can see the underlining motivation of Microsoft to become the gatekeeper for all PC software and maybe hardware too.

I've been really obsessed with computing for a little more than 2 years now. I've learned to build my own computer and tweek it to get it running like a fine little porche. I'm setting up a multiboot wtih Mandrake Linux. My next projects will be networking and programing. I think of computers and the internet as a great realm of freedom were one can learn anything and experance the new. Were there is a mixture of the good and the bad. Were a simple house painter can be more than just a simple house painter. It would be sad to see it all go away because of greed. I mean how much more do they want?

Compare most PCs to the Playstation 2 or the X Box and it becomes realizable why MS is looking for help security wise from the hardware people. Hardware can add a large measure of security. It's definetly the right way to go, the problem is that a monopoly is leading the way.
