View Full Version : Fastest processor for my computer.
I have a Gateway, slot 1 style PII 350 w/ 100 fsb running win 98.
Question: What is the fastest processor upgrade I can install?
Any info would be great.
Thanks,

Possibly a fast Pentium 3 or Celeron (800-900mhz) or maybe just a Pentium 2 450mhz...
You really need to find out what motherboard you have and, if possible, get a manual for it. That's the only way to know for sure.
Also, in order to support a Pentium 3 CPU, you may need a BIOS upgrade.
If you provide the model number of your system or BIOS string, someone may be able to help...

You will need a Slot 1 to socket 370 adaptor also..if you find the motherboard restricts beyond what you wanted..Evergreen makes a 1000MHZ Celeron upgrade that says its for 233MHZ and up Pentium 2's. It comes with the adaptor , processor and fan for $129 at www.tigerdirect.com or you could spend a little extra and just upgrade the motherboard to a Socket 370 which will gain ya some extra speed with Ultra DMA 100 or Ultra ATA 100 ..if you go any route id also recommend upgrading the power supply also..most Gateways lack in this area especially where its a few years old also. And if ya have 64 MB of ram a 256 stick would be a nice addition.

I have asked Gateway for manuals for the motherboard and other components but they refused to give them out. As for the model number, the only one I have found on the case is G6-350. I was trying to avoid making any major changes to the computer itself. If possible only upgrades, such as processor, memory, etc.

Your system has a Tolstoy motherboard (actually an Intel) and will only support up to a Pentium 2 450 officially...
I had the same exact system and went through the same trouble finding a manual, but I did find it...
Since the Pentium 3 550mhz uses the same core voltage and the same slot interface, it might/should work, but it's a gamble...
Your other choice, as pointed out, is an Evergreen upgrade, but they're pricey...
Thanks for the help guys/girls. I think I'm just going to go with the 450 upgrade. A buddy of mine is going to help me build a new system, so I guess there's no need to max out the performance of my current one.

my dad had that computer and when we tried to do an upgrade, the gain in performance wasn't going to be significant (like all you're gonna get is an extra 100 MHz). we ended up just getting a new motherboard and processor to take him up to an athlon 1.4 GHz, which isn't expensive.
I plan to build a faster computer anyway. I don't want to get rid of this one, so I'm just going to "improve" it's performance till the new one is complete.
