C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\imapi.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\redbook.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\storprop.dll

it doesn't say which is the corrupt one but i can't fix it without cd drive as they are on the xp cd

Ok...I don't need the files anymore...Thanks John :)

but The files solved nothing... I still have the problem...here is what I did:
I installed CDRWIN version 5 which unknown to me creates a virtual drive on the pc, I decided I didn't like it and i removed it using the XP add\remove programs function. This is where the fun starts lol.
I had to restart for the changes to take effect, and when I logged in again my dvd drive and my cd writer had both disappeared from "my computer" but were still listed in device manager with the little yellow exclamation mark. According to device manager, "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"
this is why i thought of renewing the files that were listed under drivers

can anyone help me, I'm stumped
by the way the restore function is disabled (oops)

Hi Philzee-

Not sure about this, but have you tried booting into safe mode and choose the option: "Last known good configuration"
or, tried the troubleshooting section in device manager including the "roll back driver" option?

I disabled the last known config thingy because i tried it once and it messed up ...

i tried the roll back driver, and got the message "no drivers have been backed up for this device"

hence the problems i'm having...when i get this fixed first thing i do is enable the restore setting

I may be crazy here, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me I have had success with the safe mode option even though my "System restore" was disabled at the time.

I'm probably crazy

Another possible option, since you're on-line, would be to download drivers for your device and install them?

You snuck in there during my edit-:)

What about downloading drivers for your device(s) and re-installing them?

If not, a better equipped guru should be along soon! Hang in there.

Hmmm,

Just to make sure, once you got the files, did you reinstall the drivers (i.e. go to the Device Manager, higlight the device that has the exclamation point, check the status of the driver and then click on 'update driver' (and pointing the program to the new copies of the files)).

Jabernutcase, unless I am mistaken (which I often am :) ), hasn't safe mode been replaced with the recovery console in XP?

Yes I tried that but the OK button would not highlight so I guess it was looking for a .INF file or something...so I tried just uninstalling the 2 drives and then overwriting the files and then clicked on check for new hardware...it found the 2 drives again but still said that the drivers were missing or corrupt (code 39)???

Actually John, they're both there- Just not so sure how they're related these days!:)

I have used both options at various times. (Believe me, I'm probably "mistaken" more often!)

ie, I have used both safe mode and system restore for different things.

What you are really facing is an ASPI problem, the installation of CDRWIN probably changed one or more of the ASPI files.

Here (http://aspi.radified.com/) for some info on how to try to install a working ASPI layer. That should bring back your drives.

Thanks to everyone for the help in fixing this problem of mine...MJC I never even knew ASPI layers existed lol but after reading the info on the link i thought about the virtual drive on CDRWIN....so I re-installed CDRWIN and guess what the problem has fixed itself...but now how do I remove the virtual drive without causing all this chaos again?
(I don't know what I would have done if I didn't know about these forums;) )

Well, you could go through the unistallation again and then see if installing a new ASPI layer works. Or you could get in touch with the people who make CDRWIN and try to get them to tell you how to unistall the program (w/o losing CD-Rom support, that is...).

Those are the two things I would try, anyway.

After installing and uninstalling CDRWIN 5 many times and running aspi check and checking all the files used by cd drives, I have found the one that gets deleted when uninstalling CDRWIN 5, the file is:
C:\windows\system32\drivers\pfc.sys

Once i installed CDRWIN 5 I copied this file to a safe folder and after the reboot i copied the file back to the directory it came from, rebooted again and voila...all drives working again, now I can relax and get back to doing other stuff lol....Anyway this info should help anyone else in the same predicament as myself and hopefully save them the hassle i had to get this sorted:D :D

Thanks for posting back Philzee-

It's always nice to hear how the problem was finally resolved.
Guess you, (or I!), won't be using CDRWIN for a while huh?!
:D
