dial-up connection

I am using win98se, IE6. When I dial out, (Actually the computer does I just tell it to) It has to verify user name and password twice. Is there a reason for this slow down?

I do not know what is happening at the isp's end but there is nothing else on my computer, this is a fresh install.

If I use hyper terminal (I think) There is only one verify user etc

Hi Jan.
I don't know about your ISP and it's systems, but my ISP also shows the "verifying username & password" twice. This is because it checks that I am a registered user, then checks the name against the phone number to verify that the account is being used from the registered address.

You could prove that this is what is happening by trying to log on from a different phone line.

I have watched the hyper terminal dail-up and it also does the second verify, but it is very quick. (Unusual for my computer)

What david eaton is saying makes sense cause I heard that Sprint (My isp) was cracking down on "dailing up from different numbers".

One thing you haven't said...what ISP are you using.

Mine only seeks verification one time, but it is a local ISP. I could imagine that the larger national ones would seek a second verification, but why should they be concerned if you dial in from another number?

It is your dime that is placing the call, whether from the number you origninally signed up with or another one.

I would call the ISP tech support and find out if they are using some sort of "double verification" and if not check you network settings. Maybe even going so far as to create a new dial-up connectoid.

I agree with all the above. But I was on Earthlink, using a network, and they found out I had 5 computers network together, and was going to charge me an $1.00 an hour for the extra computers. Yes, I dropped them and went to bellsouth where I can have as many computers as I want.

It's not doing it now.
This was on an old Toshiba laptop that I just fdisked and setup to dual boot with Win98 and Win2kpro the other day. I think it was only doing it in Win98. After I posted that I was having the same issue as Jan, I started having problems with the modem and not connecting to the internet to my local ISP. I was turning off/on every setting available and uninstalled/reinstalled the modem to get it to work... so it looks like I resolved the issue somehow on my end, not the ISP.

MJC The reason for checking the calling number, in my case at least is that I am on flat rate monthly subscription dial up, and the cost is added to the phone bill! If the number was not checked, there would be the possibility that someone could register using someone else's phone number which would be a nasty surprise when the bill arrives :D

Inverse situation to David's here. Monthly Fixed Fee to Telecom with Unmetered access (during offpeak times) but registered to my phone number - otherwise I could pass my DUN around and everyone could use it.

Just 1 verification here.

I use a toll free number to access my ISP, have unlimited hours and can access the account anywhere I want. From my folks house, sisters, wherever. I could use a phone booth I imagine.

here in the US generally one is assigned a username and password along with a dial-up access number and charged a flat monthly fee.

you can use this account on any computer you want anywhere.

the idea is that you won't LET anyone get this information because only one instance of that account can be online at a time, and you don't want to take a chance of you not being able to get on yourself!
