View Full Version : Two NICs Have crossover cable, have them connected, NOW WHAT!!!
Me and my friend decided to have a weekend of fun by me bringing my computer over to his house and networking them together for file sharing and a lil LAN action, we figured we wouldnt need a hub if its just us two, we figured we could play some games and share some files but we were wrong, it went from a great day then transformed into the day from hell by SUBNET MASKS, IPs, and GATEWAYS!!! Heres the Situation, we got the DELL 4100 Series with a realtek NIC card 10/100, and my Compaq Presario 4310US with a Easy Card NIC card(just the one that came with it) we bought a 25 ft section of crossover cable (only legnth they had) we hoooked up the cable and then went through the network setup wizard, hes got a cable modem that uses USB for the INET connection, and I planned to try to share his inet connection with me, if at all possible, we did Network setup Wizard and set them up, now what do we need to set the Gateways to???? Right now my gateway is his NIC card IP and his gateway is my NIC card IP?? WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO??????????????

Right click on network neightborrhood and choose properties.
Let us know what is listed there.
Under the identification tab, each computer has to have a unique name and the workgroup has to be the same on each computer.
You could also save time by getting a linksys router for about 70 bucks and you could be on line in about 30 seconds.....
sorry guys i forgot all about that, dumb me lol.
We got it fixed anywayz though, we jsut had to install two protocols for the connection and it was fine. We are both using XP Pro anyway, do you any of you know how to share a USB cable connection without a hub, we have a crossover cable, two NIC cards and a network connection already setup

You have two choices, (only 1 in my opinion)
1) use the Internet sharing software built into XP. Run the wizzard and follow the prompts.
2) Go to Best Buy or Comp-USA or anywhere where you can get a 4 port Linksys Router/hub combination. You will be on line faster with option 2 than option 1 and that includes the time it takes to drive to the store to get the router.
As you can tell, I prefer the router/hub to the software gateway.

There are several others out there that are similar, but I'm not sure if any of them have software for XP.
