I am currently working on a system with a Cyrix MII 333 processor and a PC Chips 585LMR motherboard. (can anybody think of a worse combination??)
The system is experiencing the usual slow downs, lock ups etc that you come to expect with cheap and nasty components. One thing I have have noticed, however, is that the bios reports the CPU to be running at 76 degrees C after the system has been on for a while.
I'm sure this figure is higher than anything I have ever seen before. Does anybody know if this is usual for a Cyrix CPU or do I need to invest in a better fan?

That is very hot, but I don't know if you can find a heatsink for that chip.

I'm not sure what the normal temp would be for a Cyrix, but I do know they tend to run hot, so the best fan you can get your hands on and a thin film of thermal grease would definitely be a good idea. 76°C sounds pretty warm for any CPU...I bet you can almost fry eggs on that puppy...

Thats WAY too hot even for a Cyrix......You need a new cpu fan....the heavy duty type with heat sink/fan in combination - they cost about $13 @ electronics stores.

What you will be looking for in a FAN is a Socket 7 combination heatsink/fan......you can get them almost anywhere.

Cheers Guys.
My new fan is on its way.
(actually if it was down to me there would be a new processor and motherboard coming as well!)

I actually liked the Cyrix 300......never had one fail in over 60 units built......I didnt care for the 333 though......It seemed to be a pretty hot running chip from the get-go.......That was the highest Cyrix went with that generation chip....ie pushed to the limit.
The PC Chips mobo is a different story......they make JUNK http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I'm putting a new Fat32 partition in my Head Drive...hope it speeds me up.......
