wireless access point

hi there

Got my hands on some 3com wireless network cards and played around with it. Later got an access point thingie that goes with it.
here's the thing:
when using only the nics it works well as a peer-to-peer network.
when adding the access point it doesn't make any noticable difference.

Is the purpose of the access point only to increase the range of the signal (like a repeater)?

A wireless access point connects a wireless network with a wired network. Some can be used as repeaters (stand alone, but you won't notice it unless your operating at the limit of your range), you would need to look at your documentation to find out if yours is one of those. You would need 2 or more wireless access point to increase your coverage.
