View Full Version : very slow boot
i have xp pro and each time i make reboot it takes like 2 minutes after completly loads,if i open "my computer" icon won't show the contains,it does, but after a minute of searching..Any idea why?
Thanks,
A Large number of things can cause a slow boot up in XP
Too many processes running
To many things in the Start up folder or Run and Run Once
To many items running doing an auto update check ( windows update and or Anti-virus )
From the Start menu then run
Msconfig and look at the Startup tab
What do you have loading and what don’t you need?
Another possibility is system Heat
If your system is not being properly cooled by the system fans it may be throttling down ..
Hi kkd and welcome,
You can try this http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/platform/performance/fastboot/default.asp I have but xp won't let me run it there a few guys here who use it .
Hope it helps.

:D
The link above says Microsoft had a goal of 30 seconds for a cold boot, I just did a fresh XP installation on an 1800 XP system with 256M DDR and an ATA 100 7200 RPM hard drive. It took 45 seconds to boot (but that is not a complaint.)

Hi kkd!
In addition to the stuff mentioned above, when ever I hear this I can't help but think about DMA. (Direct Memory Access)
I had similiar problems when I installed XP. It disabled my DMA by default for some reason.
I used Device manager to enable it and haven't had a problem since. Getting it enabled with device manager I thought was pure dumb luck at the time, then someone here posted this LINK (http://www.microsoft.com/HWDEV/TECH/storage/IDE-DMA.asp).
To my amazement, M$ actually recommends the same fix(See end of article).
That may or may not be part of the problem, but it's worth checking out!
As RICK mentioned too, there could be a lot of stuff loading that you dont really need. There are also an awful lot of "tweak" sites out there devoted to XP.
HERE (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15314) is a recent thread from this forum that mentions a bunch- If you want to drive yourself crazy with reading material! :)
Good luck- Oh yea, and WELCOME to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif forums!
