I have several workstations with Win98 on them. We have a program in DOS Clipper. On one workstation, after they are using the program for about 3 hours, they start getting GPFs and then the system reboots. Any ideas? It just started happening.

Here is a quick webopedia list of what causes them:

Running an application with insufficient resources
Using improper hardware device drivers
Corrupted or missing Windows files
Applications exchanging data that cannot be read
GPFs are often preceded by an invalid page fault.

I would say 2 or 3 is the most likely cause. Check the Win sys files with the SFC tool. Go to Run and type in SFC and run it (check its configuration - make sure that "check for changed" and "deleted" are both checked). Check that the device drivers are what they are supposed to be and that there are no conflicts in device manager. Also check and make sure that this one machine doesn't have something else running in the background that the others do not.

Also try known good memory. Bad memory can also cause GPF's and Invalid Page Faults. I just stopped them recently on this machine by changing to good memory. The old chips were about 6 years old and had taken at least 20 serious storms, two of which fried modems, and along the way 3 cordless phones. I don't always manage to get the thing turned off before a bad storm...3 miles across the lake, for instance...makes for a very interesting ride home too... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
