My pentium 3 550mhz 100/512kb processor,s cache is not working. It is not displaying anything on se440bx-2(intel) Board but it is working on other intel chipsets boards but like 286 or Xt Computer.
It is very slow when its try to boot windows98,almost take 10 minutes to reach on desktop.
Any Idea or cure ??????????????

Hello Anyc_Khan,

Welcome tohttp://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!

Have you checked in the BIOS on your "questionable" Motherboard to see if the cache has been disabled?

Thanks Whyzman ! The Problem is not in the motherBoard cause se440bx-2 is auto board,it detecte cpu automatically in the otherhand i tried serveral others board (intel chipset boards not intel desktop boards )550mhz is giving display on intel chipsets boards but its performance is worst then XT Computer.
I think 550mhz processors L2 cache is damage,so i am thinking if there is any smd fuse or resistor in processor Which activate the cache again. I am Dae Electronics & a Computer Hardware technician.

Sorry, I guess I misunderstood the problem!:(

I thought you were saying that if you put the processor into another MB you found that the "processor's cache" would then work correctly. By processor's cache I thought you meant it's onboard cache.

Intel usess a special signal to burn out half the cache to create a Celeron, so if there was a way to reactivate it then the overclocking community would have found it by now. If a way was found then all those Celerons could be turned into PIIIs. So if you are pretty sure the cache is gone then it is gone...

Well mjc. We can,t change celerone into P3. Cause the cache chip on celeron & P3 are different.. And pasting another cahce chip is nearly impossible... But you are right that if cache is not working poosible it is dead.
But near about all electronic equipments ,ve fuses. So there might be also smd fuses in p3 processor board. But Smd parts are more typical to identify cause of there small sizes. Hummm...... :)
So i guess i am there where i was ;)
AnyWay Thanks Guyzzz for ur help !

All PIII class cpus and higher have ALL the cache on the CPU die (bothe L1 and L2), therefore, they are inside the "chip". The Celeron is built on the the PIII die, main difference being half the L2 cache, which Intel achieves by disabling it in a PIII.

As to there being a fuse, well if you can open the pacakage, without breaking any of the internal connections, have an elcetron microscope, you may be able to find a fuse....

Well it is main problem to find a fuse.I openedthe pakage but there r resistors, capistors & 1 coil but which resistor is the 1 with the fuse,it is really hard to guess ! ;)

Any chance you can post a picture of what was in the package? You've certainly aroused my curiousity! :)

Just a Slot type processor.

You've not opened one up?

BTW the se(Seattle)440BX-2 is one of the
better Intel boards that were available. Prior
to everything becoming flip-chip. Still have my
old one.

Need to run a PO7 or higher BIOS.
