I have Windows 95. Lately, I have been experiencing a very slow boot up. Takes about 1/2 hour. Scandisk fails. Program fetches are very slow. I noticed the LED indicator on my ZIP drive comming on frequently whenever I start a new task and during the boot. I have nothing in this drive. It seems like it's in a loop. Once I'm in, things seem to be ok.

I would guess your drive is failing.

backup any valuable data you have on it and download the diagnostics from the website of the manufacturer of your hard drive.

Well, you could hunt for several hours for whatever is slowing you down, or you could just go ahead and reformat C: and reload windows. I would go with Windows 98 if you have a copy + DirectX 8.1 + Internet Explorer 6.0.

If format, reinstall doesn't fix the problem then you know it's a hardware problem and you can work from there.

For a fairly quick check on the drive, go to the manufacturer's website and download their diagnostic software...it will do a good job of determining whether the drive is good or not.

A HALF HOUR to boot? You must be a very patient person.

After getting the pre mentioned hard drive utility you need to be able to run scan disc, make sure everything is shut down in the background. If you don't have a hardware problem which doesn't seem likely since you say you're OK after it boots you probably have some serious .dll problems and are probably better off reformatting.
