Hi,

Can a 168pin SDRAM DIMM be used in place of 168pin EDO RAM DIMM? They both have the same number of pins, the SDRAM is atleast as fast as the EDO RAM (ie 66MHz), and I can find any cheap 2nd hand EDO DIMMS.

Please excuse my ignorance about RAM.

Cheers,

Phil.

Hi Phil,
Well on what board? It depends on ur motherBoard.. if ur board can support 66mhz & 100mhz Dimms then .. Ofcourse it ,ll work !

Check your motherboard manual carefully. It may support both kinds of RAM, but it may not.

There are a number of issues here. Although there are the same number of pins on both an EDO DRAM & SDRAM, and they will fit into the same slots, I think, they are vastly different.

EDO DRAM is asynchronous, SDRAM is synchronous.
EDO often runs at 5volts, SDRAM runs at 3.3v.
The speeds may not be compatible.

But your motherboard may have its own ways of dealing with the differences. Check.
