View Full Version : One continous beep on computer
I am working on a GA-5AX board with a AMD k6-2 350 CPU processor and when I start the power on the computer I am getting one beep that beeps every 3 seconds. I tried to review the manual and took all the cards, etc out but I can't seem to find out why it is beeping. Please help.

Hi Diz,
Is this a new build, or one that was up and running now putting out the beep code? Unfortuantely, it seems as though a single beep as you describe is not one of AWARD'S "publicly listed" codes! Change that bit, the Motherboard manufacturers "customize" the codes! ;)
Best scenario is to stip things down to a barebones system. Stick of RAM, Video card, Keyboard...
Reseat the RAM and Video a few times...
Did you check the Gigabyte website for possible codes?
Yes and there is no information on it. I have the manual and have stripped it down. I see that a COM LED jumper from the case is not connected. I look to see where it goes but I'm not coming up with anything. I tried all the spots, none work.

I dug out a GA-5AX that I still have around
from the K6 days. It is a Rev5.2 Super 7 board.
True it does have an Ali chipset.
The BIOS chip is AWARD (32 pin) with a sticker dated 1998.
A beep every three seconds or so should have something
to with the CPU. Or CPU configuration. However, RAM
problems can cause strange errors.

it is an Award Bios from a reveiw of the GA-5AX.
BIOS
•1Mbit Flash RAM
•Award BIOS with Enhanced ACPI Feature for PC98/Win98 Compliance, Green, PnP, DMI, INT 13 (>8.4GB) & Anti-Virus functions
•IDE#1~#4, SCSI, LS 120, ZIP & CD-ROM bootable
I took everything off and still getting the same result.

Check and make sure the processor used is setup correctly..meaning voltage and bus speeds settings. Also try a differnt stick of ram.
Also someone above asked if this is a new build or was the computer working before?. Need to know this as well..if it was working before expect a ram failure or maybe a PSU issue or a fan failure which could have damaged the processor, if you have no luck at all .:D If it was just built then double check every connection..make sure the board isnt making any contact with the metal case section. And check all processor settings and any jumper settings/dipswitchs on the board, use the manual as a guide.

See if THIS (http://www.efacorp.com/support/notes/980216.htm) helps. :)

Why do I get the strange feeling this
is a new assembly and someone has previously
done an improper BIOS flash?
Hopefully not.
Can you tell us any history of this Mboard?
The 5AX does not have system warning options
in CMOS so that is eliminated. Removing hardware
from the board one piece at a time doesn't change
the beep code error. You have tried booting without
a stick of RAM correct?
Down to the CPU or the Mboard. If it is at least
trying to boot up then the CPU isn't toast.
Please get back with us and list all of your jumper
settings.

One other tidbit of information- I haven't heard anybody recommend checking that you have the Case Intrusion alarm off. This has bitten me quite a few times and is a very simple fix in the BIOS. That's the first thing I would check and eliminate.
This was a working machine that all of sudden started doing the beep. One thing I thing I did do was use the power supply but I installed it back on properly.
I have tried to do it without ram and the cards. I still get the beep.
