View Full Version : Stupid Power Supply Question?

Got a problem that I've never run into before. Just bought an Aspire case. They Look like a copy of Antec's performance plus series of SOHO servers. ANYWAY-

It comes with a Turbolink 420W Switching Power Supply along with a big P4 sticker on the side. My concern is, I'm putting an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ into it with a Gigabyte GA-7VRXP mobo. Do I risk damaging my system with a "P4" power supply? I've never worked with P4's so I'm not sure of their power requirements.

Just a word of caution- If you pick up one of these boxes (Got mine at Fry's) make note of the power supply. They ARE designed for P4's. This limits your expandability due to the fact that two of the power strands are P4 specific!! Leaving you with only two other strands for periferals.

So can you hook up an AMD to a P4 power supply?

Yes

The P4 specification means it has a 4 prong 12 volt connector off the power supply

If your M/B has one of these connectors you can use it
If not you simply move that connector out of your way
and forget about it

PSU Mfg's have been making a stab at
"one design fits all."

AMD website has PSU compatability (by CPU)
and approval charts.

AMD.com no longer has the listing of power supplies, only a list of names they had approved in the past.

Turbolink is listed on Pricewatch.com under "generic"; the picture at a vendor's site shows it being identical to my Channel Well Technology 420.

With specs like +3.3V @ 28A, +5V @ 40A, and +12V @ 18A, it should be great for your system.

Oh, I forgot to mention that Channel Well also makes some models for Antec, like my SL400.

I think if you look closely at the model no. on the Turbolink, it will have the letters, "CWT" as part of the number. That stands for Channel Well Technology.

That is correct Bigblue. The powersupply has:

Model: CWT-420ATX-12v
