What is firewire? I always thought that it was just the mac version of USB but new PCs have it too.

Hi Jes,

Firewire is just another way of transmitting info/data. Much faster than USB 1.1. See here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/I/IEEE_1394.html) for an explination and some links.

It's actually a SCSI standard-specifically the serial bus port standard, { SCSI is a type of data transfer initial started by Apple before IDE became common.} and yes, it's the early equivalent of USB for MAC's.

It transfers data at around 50 MB's { 400 Mbps } persec on the average, whereas USB 1.1 transfers around 1.5MB's { 12Mbps }per sec, the new USB 2.0 standard will offer around 60+ MB's { 480-500 Mbps }persec transfer rate.

Until USB 2.0 becomes the standard, 1394 is best for audio/video transfers.

So it is like USB but is standardized?
