Avoid single coil pickups on your first gut-fiddle. The hum can get annoying if you don't know how to deal with it.

Get a good name brand. Some good names are (or at lest were when I last shopped several years ago) Gibson, Fender, Jackson, Ovation.

Remember to get a tuning fork while you're in the store, and tune every time you pick up the instrument. It helps develop your ear.

Always tap your foot when you play alone, or better yet, get a metronome. Timing is as important as tone.

Never pet a burning dog.

Good luck.:)

Wow i missed this one...ive played since i was 13..and like the above post said dont waste ya money on a 100 buck "plywood" special that will sound like junk no matter how good ya get. Now just starting you may not want to go shell out 2 grand for a Les Paul Custom ither, but you can get a really nice "in between" axe for about 300-500 bucks. Alot depends on what your musical interest are. A Fender is favored on electric blues ..and country. Gibsons are good for the "soul" blues and have a warmer tone and are best for heavy electric rock riffs and lead. I got lucky and found a 71 Gibson SG with the case for 25 bucks..lol.and nope it wasnt stolen..the guy actually thought his new $89 dollar Sears special was a better guitar..he didnt even know the difference and value of the SG. But anyway..a Jackson or the higher end Ibanez if i spelled that correct..is a good starter guitar ..now you can spend 2 grand on these brands also but they usually make lower end deals also where as the cheapest Gibson ive seen is about 600 bucks. I can play alot of Randy Rhoads stuff and have never had a lesson in my life..i play totally by ear and just playing. Just take it slow..dont try to do to much at once but dont pick it up just once a year and expect to get anywhere soon ither.
