Hi, i've recently built a new machine:
Celeron 1.1 GHz in a Soyo 7VBA-133U m/b with Windows XP Prof.

and intended to put on it my old Motorola SM56 PCI fax modem.
It worked ok on my old machine under Win98SE, using COM3.
Now, the first issue is that in the original drivers cd there isn't a Windows XP version, neither i've found them on the internet.
But, i knew that most devices will run under XP using a Windows 2000 driver, so i installed them and the modem seems to be installed properly.
However, i can't get to connect! The modem selected automatically COM4, and at an attemp to dial up XP says that probably it's an already used port. So i tried switching it manually to COM3. Same thing.
I wonder if there are the incorrect drivers or it's a configuration issue.
I've tried the diagnostics under control panel and the modem responds after a while.
Hope somebody can help

try moving the modem in to another PCI slot and see if it helps.

Alejandro,

Have you seen the thread I started a few days ago? Same modem (actually, mine's the speakerphone version I think). Pretty well the same problem, 'cept I was going back to Win 95. I have to say that I got fed up with it, and I'm still considering my next action with it!

Hope you do all right though.

Pete

I saw it, but since it was an XP problem i decided to start my own thread. However, forget about it: I'm going to trash that f****** modem!
If you see under the Case, power and cooling forum, i've posted a message "Bad PS". Last night i discovered it was the modem that was doing that noise, after replacing my power supply! Almost kills my new computer! I'll never buy such a cheap modem again.

It appears there are no specific XP drivers for that modem; using 2K drivers was the best shot I agree; but it was only a shot I guess.
