At a client's today fixing a little problem when someone said my computer is a POS it always locks & I have to reboot.

When accessing any program from the start menu you get the following error message:

The specified I/O operation on Device\Harddisk0\DR0 was not completed before the time-out period.

Re-try Cancel Ignore

No matter what selection you make, the system has to be re-booted. If
you boot up to the desktop and access programs from the desktop, NO problem.

OS: Win2K

Is this a modern Microsoft version of Not ready Reading Drive X and a sign the drive is getting ready to bite the big one? I think so, but I can't find anything on the MS site or on Google so I'm hoping some of the Super Geeks will translate this into an understandable sentence.

Thanks

Sure sounds like a 'Not reading drive' message.
I just can't guess what the 'DRO' means.

Is ther only 1 drive on the system and 1 partition?

One partition....

DRO...is that a capital "O" or a zero?

If it's a zero, I'd say it means drive C. The OS may be referring to the drives by numerical order, which in many cases starts with 0 being the first.

I'm puzzled by this one, but I think my first guess would be to run scandisk and see if the drive has any errors, then find out if win2000 has a registry checker, and if so, run that.

My best guess is the drive is having problems or the registry is hopelessly corrupt.

After re-reading, I see the error message is:

The specified I/O operation on Device\Harddisk0\DR0 was not completed before the time-out period.

I'm fairly sure that is referring to the hard drive.

Before doing anything drastic, try a new IDE cable and see if that makes any difference, also double check jumper settings and cable placement.

Thnaks for the thought Pete. Yes it is a Zero in DR0. I also assume this is a hard disk issue. The system is under warranty with Dell so I will not play with it.

It's just the client is a dentist who got the computer from one of their suppliers who got the box from Dell. So Dell won't talk to me only to the purchaser.

I just couldn't find anything anywhere about this error message.

Thanks again
