Not sure if this is the right forum but maybe someone can help-

I just built a new system and when I launch something like Device Manager then shut it down, I get the following error message:

MMC.EXE - APPLICATION ERROR
The instruction at "0x1000935d" referenced memory at "0x009a0008". The memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate program.

This also happens when I administer user accounts

SPECS-
Gigabyte - GA-7VRXP motherboard
AMD Atalon XP 2000+ CPU
512 DDR memory
Maxtor 80 gig HDD
VisionTek GeForce4 Ti 4200
Soundblaster Audigy Platinum
Windows XP Professional

Anyone run into this problem? Search in Google didn't turn up any results.

Thanks!

What I would be concerned about is that MMC.EXE is one of the files targeted by the W32.nimda worm. See this link (http://www3.ca.com/solutions/collateral.asp?CT=65&ID=1132) for one description.

I agree with Reid Nimda is the most likely cause:

To view information on nimda:

To learn about MMC.EXE click here (http://www.labmice.net/Windows2000/MMC.htm) click here (http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.nimda.e@mm.html)

Really.
I'd be surprised. I've literally only had this new system up for about 2 hours. I'll run a check when I get home and disable active scripting etc. It's possible I picked it up from an infected web host.

Well, I ran extensive testing and found no appearance if any of the Nimda variants. Another funny thing, the MMC error no longer occurs.

(Damn I love Microsoft) Go figure.

Similar error in 2k yieldsAccess Violation in MMC When You Resize the Panes (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q285900&). No mention of XP but it might give you some leads/ideas.
