my computer is a 486, when i try to boot it the power light goes on, the computer tries to boot until after the first beep, ther are no bios error beeps after, on the screen theer is only a small dash, i do suspect the video card can this realy be the problem:) :) :)

did the puter work ok before?

does the hard drive have Win9x on it?
its not alot, but other will come.

Could be the video card or it could be any number of other things. Have you tried getting into the bios setup. Usually you do this by hitting ESC as it is booting up, or F10, or some other choice. If you are getting a dash on your screen, it suggest that the video card is producing some kind of signal or you would get a flashing sign saying something about no input or possibly just a dead screen. If you are comfortable opening up the box, I would suggest opening it and making sure everything is tight in its place and possibly cleaning it out. To make sure everything is tight, you may have to unplug things and plug them back in. If you find one particular connection that is loose, that is the probably culprit, but make sure everything else it tight before closing it back up again and trying to reboot.

If this doesn't work, post more details about your system and the history of the system for people to use to try to figure out the problem for you.
