Although I have AVG set for auto update, I suspect that this has not been happening.

For starters, the list of Virus types, whilst not intended to be exhaustive, contains NONE the current variants which we read so much about.

Is there any way in which I can check out which was the last update to be taken into my copy of AVG?

I am running AVG version 6.0 and when I click the Virus Database button, it gives the date of the update.

Thanks a lot, Reid

It's so obvious that I missed it

In the meantime, I'd been into WE and looked the AVG file structure, found the Updates sub-folder, opened it up and right-clicked on each to check that them all! Oh ye of little faith:o

It's still a bit unfortunate that the virus info on display should not be reasonably up to date. A function reserved for the paid version, no doubt.

Excellent progam, nevertheless.

Thanks again, Reid.:) :)

Have you thought of downloading and then doing a maual install of the updated files? This way you are certain that you have the update installed.

To do this download to a folder and then click "Run AVG Anti-Virus" go to "Service" and choose update from folder

Hi Ernie and a good evening to you,

Hope the weather is better up there in the Borders than it is down here on Teesside!

Thanks for the tip, but I seem to have found my answer - i.e. I just wasn't looking!!

All I want now is to find away of giving AVG protection to Hotmail, or better still, to Incredimail!!! At present, the program only appears to run with Microsoft Outlook, which is no use to me.

Thanks again, however, Ernie:) :)

Virus received by mail was not detected. Resident shield detected virus after trying to open the attachment - how is it possible? This was taken from AVG FAQ (http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_faq.php?action=5&session=#1) which is probably worth reading through. One of the points being that although infected eMails may not be detected "on first arrival" they should be detected by the Resident Shield, when an attempt to open the attachment is made - so one should be protected, when any attachment is opened, as long as Resident Shield is uptodate and running. It would be nice to have confirmation that this should work for other eMail clients like Incredimail.

AVG was created with support for Outlook; but for OE5 and later there is a plugin which can be installed and setup as desired.

It appears there are a few reasons why AVG can miss a virus on "first pass". This includes having an uncompressed or overfull inbox, or because of the encryption used by some stealth viruses. Also (as I have understood it) this first pass detection only occurs with the normal OE inbox.

So the way to double-check Hotmail would appear to be to move or copy new mails from the Hotmail Inbox (using OE) to the regular Inbox. Or double-check other mails by moving them out-of and back into the Inbox.

BTW, I finally found a free MailClient called Foxmail that can do a remote sweep of both POP and Hotmail, if anyone is interested.

Sounds interesting. Could you supply details?

You can get Foxmail (http://www.webattack.com/get/foxmail.shtml) from WebAttack. Hope that's what you meant. :D
