Having in the past tried unsuccessfully to operate ZoneAlarm in conjunction with AOL v. 7 and Windows XP, I now find that the latest ZA v. 3.1.291 works perfectly within the same setup.
However, I am unsure whether to allow "Generic Host Process W32 (File name: C:Windows\System32\sychost.exe) access to the Internet. Should I click on "Yes" or "No" - that is the question.

I believe that is "Svchost.exe" To understand all about the various services that make up Svchost.exe, it is not just one process but rather an .exe file that allows many different services to function through it..many of which go out to the internet..you must decided in your setup which ones you really need. If you do not tackle that problem you will go crazy trying to figure out which ones to allow. Some you can disable.
You can Try not to allow this and if you have problems just reinstate it
BLK Viper has a good site for things that need to run in XP

Thanks Yoda Sorry about the typo - I obviously need new glasses. Shall investigate and hopefully make the right decisions. Keep your fingers crossed. ;)

I have this totally disabled within ZA. I do not allow it to access the net in any way with no adverse effects for surfing. If you do a GOOGLE search for it you will come up with quite a bit, the majority of it is totally incomprehensable (at least to me it is) My moto is if I do not know exactly what it is, disable it if possible.

Ernie Welcome to the club! I too did a Google search and couldn't make head or tail of any of it.
However, pursuing the following may throw some light on at least some of the processes: To view the list of services that are running in Svchost: Click Start on the Windows taskbar, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type CMD, and then press ENTER.
Type Tasklist /SVC, and then press ENTER.
If that doesn't help I shall take your advice and disable the lot - and hopefully will have done with it. :(

if you disable this and have a DSL (dhcp) connection, it will cause you to lose your connection after a period of time- don't recall if it affects cable.

Yep...the amount of time seems to vary but eventually it will stop me from connecting

Thanks sea and buck. I am plain modem/dial-up connection. Have allowed Internet but NOT server access which seems to work, although today I got a message saying something like “remote connection unable to connect to TCP”or something like that. But I did get connected at the third attempt. Strange?

the point being that you reconnected, and it took a few trys.
in broadband being disconnected at all is unacceptable
just thought I'd share the above cause I'm a 'turning off everything not needed' kinda guy too.
hehe
