I just moved into an apartment complex in a college town that has dsl included in the rent. They said hi speed dsl internet access included in the rent. now i just moved in and i did a bandwidth test and it said 78.9kbps. It said my performance for dsl is poor and not much better than most dialups. I dunno why it is so slow. I tried it last nite and then again today with the same results. Can they cap it to be this slow? If not do any of you have any idea why it might be so slow? This is really getting annoying.
Thanks for your help everyone.
ok i just went to another site and tried the test again, this time it said i download at 145kbps and upload at 465kbps. shouldnt you download faster than you upload? it said "Your upload speed is much faster than down.. have you tweaked?" how do i tweek my pc for my new dsl? thanks again.

Can they cap it to be this slow? Yes they can and do especially around college towns. And especially on campus.
Before we can make an assesment some system specs would help everything you have in the machine.memory.hard drive, processor,ETC....
and try this speed test and post the results

Is your DSL through a cable company or the phone company? Speed for cable DSL depends on how many people are using it.
Do you have a firewall or any other program running that could interfere with your speed. If you haven't run an Virus scan, you may want to do so in case that is what is interfering. Another possibility is that you have some sort of Spyware slowing things down, you may want to run AdAware if you have it. AdAware checks for hidden advertiser programs like spyware.
If your connection is legitimate, I would suggest calling the DSL provider. I was having a lot of trouble with my DSL connection and it is much better since they sent me a new modem.
Good luck,

hey guys thanks for the advice, my pc is an hp7915 40 gig 384mb 1.1ghz celeron...i am pretty sure i have fixed the problem. i went to a site and it said my download was so slow for dsl that i should click on this link for a registry edit to edit my latency or something? anyways, i did that registry edit on my latency and then i went to the url
www.dslreports.com and i tested my speed after i made this regedit and the numbers it gave me were 1421 / 683 for down and up. how do these numbers seem? does that seem like my regedit worked? or should i not edit my registry?
thanks again.

Sounds like you got it. Editing the registry is fine as long as you don't actually get in there and change things you don't understand.
Do you have a firewall and/or antivirus software installed. As much as you are using web based apps, I sure hope so.
Good luck,

Flingz, you should be just fine with ZA and Norton, that is what I run on my box and haven't had an issue.
To clear something up... there is no such animal as "Cable DSL." Its either cable or DSL, two VERY differant animals.
What type of connector are you on? Are you on a smaller 4 wire connection out of the wall(RJ-11) or is it a larger 8 wire connection(RJ-45). Reason I am asking is the upload is extremely high which leads me to believe your on an Ethernet LAN run by your college in which case you are using ethernet as your connection medium, not DSL or cable. Where did you download your registry tweak? For system tweaking you really only need to change RWIN and MTU.
