View Full Version : I know...lots of "nerve"

After "the change"..lol..I haven't been here a lot, but I have found myself missing it SO VERY MUCH. All I was ever qualified to handle were the "easy" questions, and many new members were expressing the desire to positively work their way to avatar status, and many of those members are at work while I am online...so I didn't want to deny them the opportunities that I had as a new member.
I have been wandering around the Net looking for "work"...sniffle..and WAIL...I haven't been able to find anywhere that needs someone like me. I found a forum that has so many questions each day that it blows my mind...but they also have many qualified people to answer those questions. Found another..has many women members (WOW!..kind of cool)..but there again, don't need me to help cuz lots of people helping there. Found a very small forum..not enough "traffic" there. Checked out Sea's recent post about forum with ratings..and that one looks good, but has popups every single click which gets annoying very quickly for slow dialup, slow puter.
I know this takes a lot of nerve on my part to ask this here, but does anyone know of a forum where there are "newbie" questions I can help with, and that doesn't require me to have a faster ISP and puter?

LOL..."keep an eye" on me, huh?? (It did feel awfully "funny" posting in another forum without the assurance/security of knowing that if I made a "boo boo", one of my teachers would catch it! Was thinking later too that I wasn't quite specific enough in my question in the sense that I am still back in the old ages of 98...know my way around that OS pretty dang well..so kind of need an "old fogey" forum, or a "poor person's puter" forum.. :D

KAY every forum needs someone like you!
so I didn't want to deny them the opportunities that I had as a new member
You won't be denying them of anything, there are plenty of questions to go round!
I know what you mean about answering the easy questions....I keep looking for the "How do I make a shortcut on my desktop" kind :D
I think you under-estimate your knowledge and contributions here.
Glad you're back
Now, get back to work :D

Kay....
I am going to * shake my finger * at you.
You have been absent from school. You will
post a note from your parents or this may be
considered an un-excused absence.

Well, I am not the only one that is sitting back a bit and letting the new ones earn their spurs...did a Search here on some user names of regulars the other day, and they've not posted much (if at all) in the last two months either.
geebee : One of the ones I got right long ago was "how do I download to a floppy?"...:D Our "expert tech"..forget who exactly.. was asking for more detail because he couldn't believe someone would ask such a simple question...:) I can do "Kindergarten through 6th".. lol..questions, and get a real thrill out of doing them.
Not to be overly stubborn and ornery, but if any of you do stumble over a "newbie" type forum, please let me know. I am "here" for them..the newbies and beginners to puters..the ones, like me, who come here needing help. For the many people, like several of my friends, who just want to know enough about their puters to work/play on them, and do simple repair. Being able to interact and rub elbows with you guys (and gals..Donna!) is just a really big perq..but not the reason I come.

Kay, have you tried a popup stopper? The forum sea put up does have a lot of newbie questions. I even get to answer some and you know alot more than I do. :D

Kay, i think that us younger members, sorry people with fewer posts can lean a lot from the people with more posts. :p

I am not so sure about that, Donna! I joined over there yesterday because I thought I needed to interject a comment on one question; and I notice you have 1000 plus posts under your name. I think maybe you've been too modest posting over here!:D On the popup stopper.. I may have to, but am always reluctant to add any background program on my older, slower. The last thing I need is anything slowing me down any further...lol.
Jiggy : Sweetie, there's a difference between knowledge and number of posts...lol! When we were not "counting" posts really, I posted questions and comments freely..quite freely! I DID remove my signature stuff because I tend to be "verbose"...to save "space" on server.. but many of my posts were not "answers." One only needs to hang out here for a week or so to "see" who are the techs...and I KNOW you know who they are...lol. :)

Kay, have you ever used the opera browser? I have it installed on my computer Just for sites that have too many popups. That might be an alternative to a popup stopper. It is also a bit faster then IE, at least for me it is.
A lot of my answers over there are ones that I have looked up on the internet, seems here by the time I find an answer that is anywhere correct, someone else has answered. I also tend to chat a bit much over there.:) And tell PMS jokes.

kayofcircles thanks for the sweetie, sound like you know me...lol. i know very little on puters thats why i spend my time here, and playing with/on puters and learning from my errors. i do tend to answer more than i post, not that i get it right, far from it, but like you said "always learning":p

Used free Opera but got tired of that add banner. If it wasn't for the banner I'd still be useing it. I use Mozilla now you can block popups by clicking on their edit menu and selecting preferences. In the advanced menu window, under Scripts and Plugins, uncheck the open unrequested windows checkbox.

Hello Kay,
I would also like to say "Glad to see you back" but I think I have been gone more than you:eek:
Anyway, there is obviously plenty to do here, so why "look" for someplace else to go. For those who have earned the respect you have here, this is the only place to be. As for our collection of icons, thats not what it's really all about is it;)
I sure hope you stick around here, if for nothing else, to let me know when I'm missing in action:D
GeeBee, quit stealing my lines:D

bassman : I noticed you "gone" too...as I said above, I did a username search on several, and except for one question you posted, you hadn't "been here" either. Maybe there's something weird about me, or maybe it's just because I live in the boonies, work at home, and don't "see" that many people...but I am very fond of many "regulars" here, and I do notice when people are "gone" for awhile, and am happy to see them back because then I know they're okay. I don't come here "for" social, but it is a really wonderful bonus thing!
Donna : LOL...just wait awhile, and you too can progress to "the change" jokes.:) No, haven't tried Opera or Mozilla (thanks, setoguro for the recommend..I know mjc uses it and likes it too)..and will think about it. Kind of "old and set in ways" here..difficult sometimes to change habits. I found yesterday that if I don't let the page "fully load"..."stop" it when it's about three quarters of the way, I don't get any popups but do get ALL the text. That works too for some of the "flashy" things/icons in many sites because text comes in first...and then flashy ads and such.
Jiggy : You're doing the same thing that I did..hang around here and "learn" and "learn"...and it's SO cool! And there is a wonderful sense of security in the knowledge that we don't really "need" to learn everything about puters, because for one thing, we "know" people here who know most everything important to know, and secondly, those same people have taught us how to "search"...lol.

Hi Kay,
I think you make a valuable contribution around here, and I hope you don't go.
If you are looking for a pop-up stopper, I agree that you might want to try Opera (it's a very nice browser). Another option would be to use a (free) program such as the Proxomitron (http://home.arcor.de/six/). It can actually do a lot more than pop-up stopping (e.g. cookie management, prevent specific kinds of javascript). The drawback is that it looks intimidating to configure, and you do have to read the documentation. The plusses are that once you get it working (which really isn't that hard) you almost never notice it, it works with whatever browser you want to use, it's free, and it completely uninstalls just by deleting its parent directory.
Good Luck with whatever you decide.
John

Don't feel bad about using 98, there are still a lot of people using it. I have 3 machines at home running it, and 1 running ME. Where I work we have about 30 machines on the production floor running 95, because it is very stable if you don't play with it. Also my wife is a grade school teacher, and most of their PC's are running 95 or 98.

I have really been thinking about upgrading to Windows. DOS is very stable, but it is a pain to get support for WordPerfect 5.0 anymore and I have been really curious about all the talk about mice and, especially, something called the BSOD. :D

Duuuhhhhh...totally baffled by seeing on "new" page that Eutychus had posted last..but couldn't see it! Sigh, old and slow is not just my puter! Forgot all about the page 2 stuff..lol.
Speaking of LOL, Eutychus ..your last post was well worth finding!:D :D
THANK YOU, john5211 ..both for the kind words and for that program! At first glanceover, that looks GOOD! Hope it works with 98 and IE 5 okay because there have been a number of times that my poor browser slows way down trying to load the stupids ads I don't look at anyway. As I said above, if I remember to click on "Stop" when I start seeing it loading things like "pic help" or "tribal fusion" or whatever, I do get all the text and that speeds up process...but the program you posted looks like it would do that and more.
My husband and I are big on the "if it aint broke, don't fix it" philosphy, Jhorner1 . I don't feel bad about still using 98, but it does mean that I can't be much help for those using XP now because I am not familar with that OS at all. Sometimes I feel a bit obsolete..but then I find questions regarding 95..and don't feel so "outdated" anymore! :)

There are three types of computer "Geeks"
1 - Those who know what they are talking about
2 - Those willing to learn what to talk about.
3 - Those who DON'T know what they are talking about
I fit into the in-between of 2 & 3 but aspire to the in-between of 2 & 1.
You fit into this catogary already, going by some of the answers you have previously given. Don't underate yourself.
But just forget the note from your parents for being absent. Just go to bed early without any supper. (you can take hubby with you if you want :D)
