Yes,
I recently installed a new hard drive and I have checked the device manager (win xp pro) and it says the device is functioning properly but when I go to "my computer", it does not appear. Whats going on. Its a IBM 80 GB drive on win xp pro, with an original western digital 40 gb hard drive . I want to run these together. What should i do?

Are the jumpers on the HDs set to Master and Slave? How about the bios settings? These and the cable connections would be the first things I would look at. If it is showing up as hardware in device manager, but not in My Computer it would suggest to me that it is not getting properly mounted in the OS. I am not familiar with XP, so I can't really say much more.

Good luck,
Budfred

Yeah I think they are set to primary, slave correctly. How do I get the os to read my drive? Do I have to format it?

If it isn't already formatted you will have to format it for the drive to work. I am not sure Device Manager could see it if it isn't formatted it though.

You may want to check your Bios setup to see if the new harddrive is listed and configured to be usable. You can usually get into as the computer is booting by pressing F10 or something like that, it usually tells you in the boot up sequence. If you aren't sure what you are doing there, post back here with more details for the real experts to tell you how to proceed.

Good luck,
