I have an old p166, on a generic socket 7 board. When i boot the comp i get it posting fine, but it gives "Floppy disk fail (40)". i have tried different ide cables and ata cables but nothing works. I dont know if the floppy drive jumper settings can be changed but it is a really old floppy drive. Also one of the jumper pins on my fujitsu 4 gig drive for the master settings keeps pushing in, is the drive kacked or can i just switch it to slave and the cd rom to master, and would it work that way. Any advice would be appreciated, i have the comp like in my signature but i am trying to fix this up for a friend, who is not comp literate.

With regard to your Floppy Drive.....I'm sure you know that you must use a floppy cable(has a twisted cable) in order for it to work (ie...IDE cable wont even fit on it!)...if you have it cabled correctly (a good measurement is if it doesnt stay lit all the time) then it is likely worn out and needs replacement. The Hard Drive wont work as a Master, Slave OR Cable Select if it is defective http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif.......doesnt matter what setting you put it on if it's broken. A good way to tell is to put a Startup disk in the computer and run FDISK ......see if the hard drive is recognized by Fdisk...If not, you probably have a bad drive (assuming it is cabled correctly and is "seen" by the BIOS).

i did use the twisted cable and the light does stay on. and it was working a little while ago and then my friend put the hard drive in and it started to give problems. the problem with the hard drive is that it was working fine, then i went to change the jumper settings and the pin on the top of the master set, when i went to put it back on is pushed in, i can pull it out but it keeps going back in when i try to put the jumper back on, thats why i asked if i could change it to slave, or any way to test it. it was being detected by bios but after pin got pushed in it doesnt anymore, and it also doesnt detect cd rom, which it did before along with the hard drive. but the light on the rom goes on and then off like it should. any ideas?

The Floppy Drive LIGHT should NOT, repeat NOT stay on !! If cabled correctly, it only comes on for a second when you first boot and again only when accessed....not all the time or it is cabled backwards http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif. With the Hard Drive, it sounds like the pin has become unsoldered....so the only thing I know to do is try it with the "Cable Select" pins shorted or run it on a different IDE channel with NO pins shorted. Let us know.
