I've noticed that data transfer has been a little slow from this drive. I have it set as slave to a Plextor 40/12/40 CDR. DMA is turned on and it is set at UDMA 4 in the BIOS. I am running WinME, system specs in my profile.
I have run Nero drive tester and it reports the drive as using Constant Linear Velocity at a steady rate of app. 18x. I realize this might be normal with an audio Cd, but I was testing with a data cd. The drive would not read at a rate any faster than 18x.
I then tested the Asus E616 DVD with Nero using the same CD. It registered as using Constant Angular Velocity in which the read speed varies according to where it is reading from the disc (faster at the outside than the inside). It reached a peak of app. 43x.
Does anyone have this drive (the Pioneer)? How can a 16xDVD/40xCD drive use CLV at 18x when reading a data disc? Any ideas?

I also have my Pioneer 106S slave to my Plextor 40X12X40 CD-RW
SiSoft Sandra gives my Pioneer 106S an 4285 reading a DVD and my Plextor 40X12X40 gets an 3778 reading a data CD and an 5X32 gets a 3000 so it must be faster than 32X. Easy CD Creator says both drives are running at 40X when copying from the Pioneer to the Plextor so my 106S must be reading at 40X.
It may be the Nero software not reading the speed right.

I realized that it was an audio cd that I tested. Interesting though, the Pioneer incorporates both technologies. When reading a data disc it uses CAV and reaches a peak of app. 38x. When reading an audio disc, it uses CLV and has a steady read rate of app. 17-18x.
Needless to say, it is a bit slow when it comes to DAE.

Also, the software isn't actually Nero, it comes with Nero and is called CDSpeed. Here's a link where they have the results of various tests on over 200 models, and tests on CDR media. Interesting.
http://www.cdspeed2000.com/go.php3?link=daeresults.php3 You can also download the tester for free, it's a neat little benchmarking tool for cd roms, transfer rate, speed, access time, cpu usage, spin up/down time, DAE quality, etc.

I like the Pioneer drive, no complaints. I think I like the Asus just a little more, because I like to make backups of my music library and the Asus uses CAV for digital audio extraction, and rips much faster than the Pioneer. A hard choice though, because I love that slot load!

I recall we discussed these drives in another thread. I have now gone ahead ( I know it's silly) and installed both the Asus and the Pioneer in my system. The Asus, because it is ATA 100, I have as slave to my HDD and I use it for making copies (it's also 48xCD as compared to 40x for the Pioneer.) I use the Pioneer for installations and general purposes. This seems to work great as the Asus is on average 40 seconds to a minute faster than the Pioneer when copying, and the seek time on the Pioneer is better. Both drives are exceptional products.
