I have recently upgraded from Pentium 100 to Celeron 800, but a lot of things aren't working. I ghosted the old HDD onto the new HDD and everything seemed to work fine except The onboard modem will not connect me (it dials and rings but fails to connect). The 12x burner will not burn at any better than 4x without overrunning the buffer (with no other active processes) And even playing audio cds seems to result in some skipping. The supplier says that this is 'cause I ghosted, the old drivers are interfereing with the system and clagging things up. Is there any solution other than formatting the HDD and starting from scratch ???
thanks.

You could try running regedit and search for Enum under HKey_Local_Machine when you find Enum delete it and reboot. This will force a reload of all system drivers etc. If that fails do the big F word, Format. Formatting should not be looked upon as such a terrible thing to do. As long as your personal data is backed up,as it should be the only inconvenience is installing all your master softwarwe. Your cd shouldn't skip when playing music, if it does it is defective.HTH John http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I normally recommend format/reinstall as a last resort only, but when swapping motherboards it's the only way to go for me. The problems you're having are mostly caused by motherboard specific drivers left over from the previous board, and which might not have been replaced by "ghosting" the old drive to the new machine. The drivers etc from the previous motherboard/chipset aren't working with your present setup.
I would also advise staying out of the registry unless you happen to be very good with it. Boot into Safe Mode, open Device Manager and remove the Motherboard Resources listed in System Devices, and hard drive controllers. Reboot and have the Windows CD handy, Windows will spend about 20 minutes finding and installing new hardware, and you might be fixed up...
I would format the thing and start with a clean drive if it were me.

Pete is right as usual! You didnt mention what operating system you cloned over......If it was Win 95.......you will have a very hard time getting everything to work ....the BEST thing to do if you DONT want to start over is to install the Win98 SE upgrade now ....If you are running Win98 SE ALREADY......then by "removing" HD controller, Advanced Power Management & Motherboard Resources.......you SHOULD be able to get things squared away.
