:( I get a " While intializing device VKD windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. System halted." error message every other time that I try and boot my PC. On the time that the the pC does boot i have no problems running it. Does anyone have any ideas.

This error will happen if you have installed software or hardware recently??
There are a couple things you can try Disconnect the keyboard & power up the computer
Shut computer off, reconnect the keyboard & power up.

Or:...
Reboot the computer and press F8 or hold the control key before windows begin to load to get into the safe mode options.
Select option: #7. Safe mode at command prompt
At the command prompt type: scandisk /all or scandisk /all /surface
The scandisk should begin running. If scandisk detects a disk error select the option to fix it.
When its is finished, and you restart your computer, the "registry" checker program will probably report that it has found an error and is going to restore a good copy for you. The problem should now be solved.

If neither one of those works Another file to Check is to check your System.ini file:
Go to START -> RUN and type in msconfig and click OK. Select the System.ini tab and scroll down to the Keyboard entry. Click on the "+" sign to open it and see what it says:
[keyboard]
subtype= (blank)
type=4
keyboard.dll= (blank)

Now look at the [386nh] section: It should have
keyboard=*vkd
If you have an entry: device=vkd.386 - try UNchecking it. Click Apply and OK and reboot for the changes to take affect

Hi Alan Dance
Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif forums.
I believe that is a keyboard error. Try shutting down your computer(Completely). Then check your keyboard connection to be certain it is fully connected.
If that doesn't work, try to get hold of another keyboard you can try.

(Edit) Man, you sure have to be fast around here! (I had a bad keyboard once that gave the same error)
