"Homegrown tomatoes, homegrown tomatoes. What would life be without homegrown tomatoes?!" :)

It's the middle of August, in a very tropical year. As long as you can keep your garden watered, this is THE year for HOMEGROWN TOMATOES! It is amazing. I picked all that were ripe this morning. Come home this evening and there's a half dozen more!

I'm havin' scrambled eggs with HOMEGROWN TOMATOES for breakfast. Tomato with mayo sandwiches at lunch. Tomato salsa with anything for supper.

The taste is a little peek at heaven. As the juice runs down my beard and stains my shirt, all I can think of is...."can it ever get better than this..."

I love HOMEGROWN TOMATOES....:)

I have to agree with you there stevo. Nothing beats a homegrown tomato and mayo sandwich.:p The ones from the store are disgusting. And for those that do not have room for a standard garden they can be grown in 5-gallon buckets. :D

Howdy

Absolutely nothing better... the month of August was created for eating fresh from the vine tomatoes.

I even brought a couple of sweet 100 cherry tomato plants in buckets to the marina where I work
so I can snack during the day :)

:D Absolutely. It ain't summer until I have eaten a vine ripened tomatoe or twelve! Mayo, a dash of basil, a sprinkle of salt...

I agree, there is nothing like homegrown 'maters. To me, I prefer to just slice them up and sprinkle on a little salt. Just one of life's simple yet best pleasures! :D

Oh yeah, garden grazing with a shaker of salt!

When I was a kid and we could still gain access to the dam on the Mississippi here in Minneapolis, we'd go "carp bonging!" What's that got to do with tomatoes you might ask?

Best I explain...

When they shut the dam there remained a pool of water on the concrete slab where it had been slightly hollowed from the water flow. In this pool of water remained huge numbers of trapped carp. We'd find a decent sized stick we could easily wield and begin smacking the water randomly. Ok, we'd just go absolutely nuts and jump around trying to show each other up and bong the carp! :D

In a matter of moments dazed carp would float to the surface. We'd collect them on a stringer and head home to my Father's garden. Under each cherry tomato plant we'd place a carp.

Well, we had cherry tomatoes in quantity and size that had we wanted to try for a sequel to "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" props would not have been a problem! :p

Having gotten all our trees planted and growing, we put in a garden this year for the first time. Been rather disappointed because nothing in garden seemed to care much for well water..just sort of "sat" there, doing nothing..lol. Last month, we FINALLY got some beautiful, wonderful rain and now we have tomatos and squash. And while I agree on your "can't get too many tomatos"...we are getting just a bit tired of yellow squash! You guys want some??

Last year my wife I planted 12 tomatoe plants. Needless to say, we had more than enough.

I like them sliced with salt and pepper. Or, sliced with a touch of salad dressing and a dab of sugar on them. Hmmmm, tomatoes.

Hey yeah, I'll take some of those squash, I think. I like the summer squash that you can slice and fry. Speaking of frying, we really like fried green tomatoes, too.

Hi David,

Nothing I'd like better than clotted cream.
But we don't get it here in Kent. :(

"Clotted Cream" Where are we going with this!? For some of us on the other side of the pond (perhaps I'm the only one) this sounds like something undesiralbe. Sounds like something the Docs would tell you would definitely send you in for emergency bypass stuff!

However, I'm sure this is in a totally different vein than I'm thinking! :D

RD...yes indeed! And for sure they're the best with the fresh garden variety tomatoes. I'll eat BLTs year round, but when you have to use those hot house tomatoes during the off season...well, it all the more invites one to realize the summer delicacy! ;)

Yes, they are GREAT! They don't take up too much room and they produce a lot per plant.
I can't imagine being one of those people that don't like them! I have a nephew that doesn't like them!

The big beefsteaks are nice and ripe now. I've been stuffing them with rice, shrimp and jalapeno peppers, then baking them. MMMMMMM....:) :)
